We arrived around midnight Friday night.  Unpacked and hit the hay.  We hunted Kenny's stands Saturday morning and all saw deer.  I saw a real nice buck that I would have burned my buck tag if he had given me the opportunity.  I had a staring contest with a mama doe.  I lost the contest.  Altogether we saw 27 from Kenny's stands on the first morning.  It was pretty much the same story each set we made.  Tons of deer moving.

We set a few stands up and went to the cabin to get some lunch.  That afternoon I hunted with my grandson.  We saw 5.  Saw another really nice buck but he was just a little too smart for us and came to within about 40 yards.

I’m not a great story teller so probably won’t be too long.

Last year Kenny gave Luke a grunt call.  Boy we’ve been hearing that used a lot in two years.  Haha.  This year he game him some rattling horns to go with it.  Think I may let Kenny sit with him a hunt or two to repay him.  LOL

I made all the bows taken on this trip.  Three longbows and a static recurve.  The first to fling an arrow was grandpa.  I shot a little doe Sunday morning.

The next to let one go was Luke on Monday morning.

Just left David Flanrey’s house. He’s elbow deep in deer meat.  Lol.
Bet he will get back to story telling soon.

KennyM. Luke says he will take you up on that offer. Lol!!!

Getting back to the story.  The next to loose an arrow was ole grandad.  Noah picked out me a spot where deer were wearing out the burr oak acorns.  Also had several rubs and scrapes.  Got on the stand around 3:30.  About 4:00 3 doe came flying into the woods.  I looked behind them and a small buck was chasing them.  He lost them and it was really bothering him I guess.  He stayed withe me looking and trotting around for at least twenty minutes.

At 5:00 it started raining sleeting and snowing.  I looked straight ahead and coming over the hill was my buck.  Grunting and trotting he came right to where the doe had entered the woods earlier.  Instead of coming on into the woods he turned and headed to where the little buck had walked by me.  He came broadside at 23 yards and I let it go.  I had just gut shot the biggest buck of my 56 years.  I was sick!!

We decided to wait till morning to look for him.  Not wanting to push him.  Didn’t get much sleep to say the least.  We went out the next morning way before daylight because I had used an arrow with a lighted nock.  Didn’t find him.  So we got on our stands for another set.

As I sat there that morning I stared a hole in the ground where he stood when I shot.  While I was moping Noah was shooting.  He had been seeing one buck after another the entire hunt but none would give him a shot.  He was going home the next morning so time was running out.  He had a big 9 that came  lose enough but behind too much brush.  Had another real nice 6 come and do the same thing.  But as Noah put it the 5 pointer caught him in a real bad mood.  He shot him at about 10 yards.  We had a fairly long track job.  Tough buck!  But with ole eagle eye Luke’s help we found him.

After we tracked Noah’s buck up and took some pics we headed back to look for mine again.  The boys tried to cheer me up and said that they were optimistic about finding him but I wasn’t.  Luke asked how many points he had and how big the rack was.  LOL I told him I was trying not to look.  He looked like a big four wheeler with antlers to me.  We spread out and started walking.  Rain and snow had washed away any sign there would have been.  I bet we hadn’t looked over 5-10 minutes and I walked right up on him.  I let out a big holler that I had found him.  I don’t usually get really emotional or excited like I used to but that was a big relief.  I’ve lost some deer and it is a terrible feeling.  And to lose one like this would have been even more tragic.  He had only gone about 200 yards.  When I shot him he was quartering away some apparently because I caught some ribs on exit side.  Got some liver along with gut.

I was shooting my 64” three piece using a Grizzly 145 grain single bevel with 100 grain brass insert.  And the lighted nock was still burning inside the buck after 18 hours.

Oh yeah,  Luke told me and Noah that “ if we would just drop um we wouldn’t have to look for them”.  Sage advice! :archer2:
