Wyoming elk and deer points.
«

I let a bull walk at 10 yards back in 2012 thinking that there were bigger in the area. Never got another shot. I have been buying points to go back ever since. I have 6 elk points and 7 deer points in Wyoming. It will probably be 2 more years before I can go for either species. What areas should I be looking at with 7-8 points for non resident? I don't know anyone with any non resident points so it would probably be a solo hunt. I'm in Oklahoma. Not crazy about hunting alone in grizzly country so that narrows it down a little... LOL. Not getting any younger, I will be 54 this January.

I was 56 the first time I went to Colorado for elk and 60 the second time.
Nobody notified the elk I was coming, though.

38 is a coveted tag for archery elk. Not sure how many points you need to draw that area but every year it goes up because of the “point creep”!

I'm saving for 45. Have 6 points. Tried the lottery twice with no luck.

Looks like 45-1 had quota of 83 and issued 44 and took around 11 points for 100%.

That is quite a resume Razor-sharp, Thank you for kicking all their asses. I hope you get drawn next year. I won't be putting so that should help! (We are building a new house on a few deer hunting acres we purchased, won't have time for a big elk hunt).

Since someone mentioned 38... I've been applying for that unit and have 10 points now. If I didn't have so much tied up in that unit I'd switch. I thought I might draw that last 2 years but it never happened. Pretty soon my preference points will cost more than the tag, lol! Hope that helps a little.

Crazy to think I actually drew twice for 38 years ago, both times it took 3 points. I think those days are gone.

It’s getting tough in WY, I have drawn two premium bull tags and hope for one more before I get out of the point race. Might just use the points on a General tag and be done with it. Hoping for one glorious season when I cash in all of my elk, deer and antelope points, and hunt like crazy in September!

The ranch hunts are crazy expensive. It would be difficult for a solo non resident to be successful I believe.

There are a lot of areas that are easier to draw with only a few points. They are typically overlooked because they aren’t known for “big” bulls or are hard to get to. They can be gold mines if you put in the homework and don’t mind putting in the miles.

This was my hunt a few weeks ago.
I cannot disclose the location out of respect for my brother who has spent years researching the area. It is remote and hard to get to but the hunting was phenomenal and fairly easy to draw with only a few points

Nice bull! Congrats! That is the issue being a solo non resident, find access to an area with good opportunities is tough without some local insight.

Nice bull Crittergetter!
Jim, you might consider joining the BOW. Their quarterly magazine provides some good tips on new places to hunt, and several members have been helpful when I’ve drawn good tags or even just searching for a new area to hunt.

Does anyone have a recommendation for an outfitter that is traditional archery friendly? By the time I get to go I might have enough saved up if I sell a kidney! LOL
