Shelf to hand distance

What's the deal with shelf to hand distance and what does it actually change?

From one bow to the next it might be different...based on how the bow (grip, shelf, etc) is made, but if you are gripping a bow consistently the same (you should be doing this) it should be the same from one shot to the next or one day to the next.

Personally....a shelf that puts the arrow close to the top of bow hand...as little distance as possible

personally the greater the distance from shelf to top of hand the higher i shoot...your results may be different

I don't think its a big deal if the arrow is right above the hand or above it a bit.You would most likely adjust to it quickly when shooting a bow.

I like it right above the hand mostly.But shoot bows just as well when its above my hand a bit.Guys shoot with stick on rests that put the arrow up higher above the hand and or feather rest that raises it up as well and shoot great.I don't have issues with it personally when going from one bow that has the arrow very close to the hand to one where it sits higher.I adjust quickly to it personally.Your mileage may very.

Any effect on can't? It seems like canting would be weird.

I like the shelf to be as close to my hand as possible so long as there is no contact between my index finger and the feather. With some bows, I have to hold my index finger out of the way to avoid feather contact, and I think that detracts more from my accuracy than the closeness of the shelf adds to it.

I've got a Thunderchild that has my hand right up there. I do shoot that bow very well,but the feathers will cut the top of my hand enough to bleed sometimes.

Rick, sometimes, just changing to the opposite wing feathers will cure that problem!

I would think the main benefit to putting the shelf closer to your hand is that as you cant the bow more then the arrows position changes less.

I like my arrow sitting as close to my bow hand as possible.  Gives me the most accuracy and repeatability from shot to shot.
