Deer Scents,,,what are you using??
« on: October 30, 2019, 07:56:43 PM »
I would like to hear what deer lure/scents you guys are using this year with the pre-rut just starting. I use James Valley Full Rut, or Mrs Doe Pee. I have a great testing ground here out back and some scents work better than others and some don't work at all. But I would like to know your go to scent for this time of year. Thanks for your input.

Evercalm is all I use as a deer scent.  I often use skunk scent as cover scent.

I stop using it years ago. Seemed like a waste of money.

In an extended effort to keep CWD out of La. we can only buy certain "certified" deer scents. I don't use them so I haven't notice which brands are available here. Like Gcook I do use skunk scent though.

Fox urine mostly. Play around with other scents but with mixed results.

Stopped using skunk many years ago as a cover, think about it when does a skunk spray, when there is danger or he is defending himself.  It's an alarm scent.

Here’s the only way I use scent...I buy a fresh bottle of doe in heat “estrous” like code blue a small bottle because you’ll throw it out after 3-9days of using it and buy new next year. I use a car, or a bike, not walking, and I’ll drag the scent “rag” from far to where I want the deer to go and refresh a few times with a spray. You pretty much have to use it during the actual action period, so like Nov 7-?. But only do it a few times during that time unless you’re hunting new deer. I drag across fields with the intent of intercepting traveling bucks, and they’re all NOSE at this time...and they’ll follow that scent line like you can’t believe. Not all deer will follow it, but when they do it’s awesome.  I watched a big buck track a scent dragline with his head up high,  never lowering his head because their nose is crazy good, and my buddy proceeded to miss it after it came from 1/4 mile away on that scent line.

I do this on occasion based on the situation. A couple years later in the same spot I rattled up a giant from over a 1/4 mile away to 8 yds...gotta be versatile  :goldtooth:

I do it very similar to overspined. I use drags after only during the small window of pre rut. Halloween to maybe be 4th/5th. When they’re actually  in rut it’s a waste. To comment on the above osts, I also believe skunk is an alarm scent and don’t use.
Ever calm has never worked. Flat out waste around here. I’ve used any types w good results from kirschners silver top, Robbins x rated, more commonly James Valley and this year I’m trying Smokey’s. Have yet to though. Drags if used sparingly and on fresh deer at the right time can work wonders

Here’s the thing..99.999% of the time I use 0 scent. I don’t like touching it, carrying it, messing with it, and it’s sort of a strange thing to use scent collected by a deer farm. If it disappeared I wouldn’t care. But, it can work in the right situations and I’ve used it in a few rare situations because nothing else would work.

As far as cover scents...it’s been explained that we smell cookies, and animals smell the individual ingredients in the cookie, I’ve tried cover scents as a kid and found it not effective IMO. I would think skunk is the only one that could actually overpowering but who knows.

While I try it every year (cause who knows, it may work) it never really HAS worked for me :dunno:

Last year was the only year I’ve had a deer clearly come in following a drag line BUT that was me dragging the tarsal gland from a buck my dad shot the day prior during the rut NOT store bought

That all being said I’ll be buying some to try this weekend as our rut is starting to get moving, I’ll be buying the fresh/frozen stuff at the store

I never had any luck with James Valley Wall Hanger, actually I have seen Wall Hanger spook mature bucks here. But I have seen bucks come running on my drag rag laced with James Valley Full Rut and Lethal Weapon.
