Man....a year wait and they finally came. Last February I spoke with Kevin and Sue at RER about a special project. I wanted a set of twins made. A matching Vortex and 3 pc Recurve. A year later, here are the results.
The risers of both bows are Bloodwood. A neat wood that I happen to love the color of and it's aptly named. The flares on both bows are Gaboon Ebony. I told Kevin to make em black.....like a Steinway piano black. And he did. If it wasn't for one tiny little streak of brown in the recurve riser, you'd swear it was phenolic. They are that black. Both have bamboo verneers on the limbs and both are 50#'s @ 29 inches. I left the overlays up to Kevin's discretion and he did good. The man is a flat out Artiste.
Special credit goes to Leroy Carlson, (Goldenhawk). His original "Bumble Bee", a Vortex made from Ziricote and Osage, was the inspiration behind this project. The striking contrast between the Ziricote and the Osage made me want to do the same kind of thing except with this combination.
Thanks Leroy!!!
I'll also add that anyone looking to add a little mass to a longbow riser....consider the use of Gaboon Ebony. It is DENSE stuff for sure!!!
