White oak family bow
« on: December 23, 2019, 08:51:44 PM »
Gift for friend and family. 30lb 72" White oak with walnut handle board bow. 71" n to n. Heavy 1.25" wide board. Thin pyramid. Tips .5" wide. Limbs 5/8ths" down to 3/8ths taper. Took bout 1.5 set probably due to width and depth. Still gotta final sand and will get top limb bending 8th to quarter inch less than the bottom limb. Also gotta fix tiniest twist in bottom limb. If I lose much weight I may knock off a half to full inch on each tip but I think I'm good as is. I told him I'm going utilitarian finish of just a couple of coats of poly to seal. Should be fun for everybody. Pictured is my draw, long draw to my ear to simulate him, and i haven't measured weight at kids draw but it should be fine. Great piece of white oak. In my experience white oak may take a little set but has never broke on me. Always surprised by beauty once i finish it.

My friend did the ffl on a vintage double barrel for my dads 80th as a gift to me and since i haven't got him back with a hunting or fishing trip, I've been making this bow that him, his wife, and early to mid teen kids can all shoot. Perfect family for it as he, his wife, and kids go to marksmanship weekends throwing axes, knives, shooting bows, and different guns. He teaches conceal and carry and hunts compound too. Fun family!!!!

Will post final product and she'll be prettied up but I'm feeling all good on this easy, small amount of time, quick, do what it's supposed to do, not perfect but good enough for me and it's job bow. It's all about the small successes that make others so happy that I love!!!! Kinda like God is strong in our weakness and imperfection. It all gets used!!! Merry Christmas!!!!!

Soaked it in wipe-on poly to check colors. This handle was some of the prettiest walnut. I had to buy a slab of at a premium. Wasn't with the dimensional walnut lumber. Going to have to get more since I think this is the last of it. Sent buddy pics so I'm not tempted to keep it!!!! Again, white oak lookin plain til the poly touches it then bam, expectations exceeded.

Still course grit scratches to take out then will get a few nice coats on and will rub with steel wool and finishing wax.

Finish is curing before satin polish.
