Tri lam recurve?
« on: December 26, 2019, 04:21:29 PM »
Hi guys, I’m looking for some input for a build I’d like to do. So far in my forays into bow building, I have made a bunch of tri lam longbows.
I would like to build a recurve in the same style. Bamboo backed and bellied with a wood core. I have some risers that I made some time ago that require the back and core to curve up the ramps . I’m planning to make a caul to heat bend those lams into that curve and another to bend all three lams plus a tip wedge into the curve at the tips.

I’m wondering if this idea will work. Will the limbs be stable? Will they blow up?
Any ideas or help will be appreciated.
Dave.

James Parker makes ton's of these.
So this is a boo back and belly, 3 cores and 2 boo's
riser is 1-5/8" thick back to belly after glue up, 2 cores on the back of the riser and 1 core on the belly of the riser and the riser is 16" long. No need to heat bend for the riser.
With a total of 5 lams it  will be easyier  to recurve.
Hope this help's

You make the lams and boo thin enough and they will bend into whatever you want.

Problem is getting the bamboo thin enough. It’s close to 2” wide and even with knife edges, the middle is still thicker than I like.
The core isn’t a problem. One lam or 3, it will bend.
If I have to use heat on the boo, does it respond better to dry heat or wet?

Did you see the pictures above that Max posted?

Not much of a curve to worry about unless yours is more radical?

Cut the boo to the width you need then reduce the thickness.

There's lots of ways to do it I guess.

I make them. But my process and materials are more simple than what you have in mind. I don't heat and prebend anything, but rather, just bend them into shape during glueup. I narrow the bamboo backing to a slightly oversized final width profile before thinning. This allows it to be made thin enough and tapered.

Mine are bamboo backed, with two wood lams. I grind the lams like I do glass bow lams, and I'm usually not too far off on tiller or weight, but some adjustments are usually wanted, so I'd rather have wood on the belly for tillering and weight reduction. My handle piece is smaller, and shaped just like my selfbows, and gets glued on afterwards, but I see what you're up to there, and I see your dilemma with the belly boo pertaining to width, thickness, and bending it down into those fades.

Thanks for the advice guys. Mark sent me an excellent link showing how to get the bamboo bent. This is perfect as I’m going with some pretty tight curves.
