I think the thing is keep the tenon parallel front to back and about.008 taper on sides. almost falls out on its own but no wiggle when together so far.

Might get stuck with a one pc. bow... I think there is a general rule in mold making... Make a mold with a 1 to 2* taper so that you can remove the pc. from the mold...

Well sir done my last three like that no more than .003 taper. this one had .002 Jim sez try to keep them parallel frt. to bck. Taper on the sides.
Anyhow this one has KY.coffeebean veneers quarter sawen.

Yep, 20-40 pulls each time. Long story short there was a bit of operator mis-read which was compounded by an equipment challenge and I ended up with a couple of very mismatched limbs so I've thrown it in the corner but might pull it out at some stage and rescue it for something - can probably make a very light/kids bow if I weaken up the strong limb to match. ). It's 1.25" straight until the last 8" tapering to 1/2" with a 12" riser and I'm planning on a straight glue up to keep it simple. This is the first fully shaped riser/handle that I've done, and I'm a little unsure how to shape out the fades to paper thin with my limited tools. Belt sander mounted on it's side and use the end roller as a kinda spindle sander?

Interesting....... I have wondered about using Eucalyptus. It's pretty wood, really heavy!
Is it at all brittle? For your fades, if you can get a clean cut close to the line, you can taper it without too much trouble with varying grits of sandpaper wrapped around some 2-3" PVC pipe

I can't really comment not having worked much/made a bow with it yet but I do know spotted gum has been used successfully here quite a bit both in board and stave form. I suspect it's a bit like your hickory and red oak, not the first choice but readily available and works ok. It would be interesting to see if some heat treating does anything for it. There are other eucalyptus' that have been used successfully also, but they're much harder to get hold of in general. It's unfortunate that our other widely available eucatlyp in mountain ash/tassie oak etc. makes poor bows as it's relatively easy to find in straight grained boards.

Roger on the PVC, I'm assuming you're talking about final shaping once glued up on the bow?

Scrappy. A buddy needs a riser for one set of his Black Hunter limbs. Some left over camo and bloodwood. And am seeing why they sell these bows so cheap.

Thanks Flem, ended up doing a combo of all three - cut closeish, belt sander, finish with pipe. Worked fine with a bit of elbow grease and got them see through on the tips

Only question is, will the nodes at the end of the fades create a problem when tillering?
