I love late season , although it didn't feel like it today .
Went to the lease since all the hunts are over and plopped on a stand. Ran 3 does off just before I got to it. Dang!!
Had 3 does go by about 2:00 pm , just watched em at 14 yards. Love this stuff!!
4:30 pm a lone doe comes from my right and stays behind the big cedar tree that gives me good cover in the big pinoak the ladder stand leans against. Ends up 2 feet from the ladder and goes on by.
More deer are coming across the little ditch 25 yards in front of me ,and the bigger one stands and waits. My heart is hammering and I think they hear it.
The doe under me suddenly jumps out into the CRP field to my left. The deer by the ditch watches her and messes around a bit more. The bigger deer heads on up the ditch and the closer one starts turning slowly and looks at the bigger one.
Well, its gonna be now or never, so I draw and anchor, and shoot. The deer drops low and takes off and I think I shot over it. Then I hear the raspy gurgle and know I hit it. I sit for 25 minutes (25 left to dark too) and sneak down to the spot of the hit. Not any blood but the feathered end of arrow is laying down the trail a few feet.
Small spots of blood lead to larger spots and then the deer. 60 yard recovery .
Will have a pic in a bit...
