Straight fletch

I bought a pile of feathers for some new arrows. I got left wing so its an issue. I do have straight clamps for my jojan. Anyone not use helical ?

You can set the clamp slightly offset to give the arrow greater spin.  Even if you fletch them perfectly straight, the curvature of the feather itself will impart some revolution to the arrow flight.  Straight or offset won't spin as much as more helical, but it usually works just fine.

I've shot offset straight fletch for 30 years. I have a JoJan Multi-fletch. You can do the same with right wing or left wing with the JoJan straight fletch.

So to get off set just use a straight clamp and shift the front?

...and the rear. You may have to experiment a bit to see what works and flies best for you. Even straight fletch without offset will spin the arrow because of the resistance the feathers have but offsetting will give it a bit more...and a lot more isn't always the best. That why I suggest a bit of experimentation.

If I am not mistaken instructions for setting up the jig are still available on the old JoJan website. I have one jig setup with straight clamps. I used to fletch all my family’s arrows with vanes using a straight offset. Not much just enough. They had no issues with arrow flight. I even did some arrows for my ASL using straight offset, after all that’s what Howard used.

A lot of people use an offset the width of the quill and it works and fits well on the shaft.

With too much offset you don't get good glue contact between the quill and shaft. I think the helical clamp probably eliminates that situation but straight fletching works just fine. You can also adjust the size or shape of the fletch to improve arrow flight and reduce noise if necessary.

I did some with some low profile 4 inch bananas,and liked it. I just moved the front and back around until I got good contact with the shaft.

Been fletching straight fletch for 50 years. I have taken a couple of animals with those arrows fletched that way.

This is the back half of a set of Duraflight glass arrows I had in the late 60s with straight, offset fletch. All were used up on deer kills.
