Hi,
I discovered vintage bows surfing on the web this week.
I love the way these bows look. But I can’t figure out how they have another wood showing in the sight window (I beam?) while it is not showing in the handle section ?

Does someone here have any idea how this is built ?

Well I've never done that, but since nobody who has is offering up any ideas, I would guess that the sight window wood is laminated into the riser as a short block to be exposed as it's cut out.
Sounds reasonable eh?
I'll bet Stic knows how.

Almost looks like a glue line going down the grip about where the edge of the sight window is, but they surely didn't butt joint an I beam in there!

Is it possible that the sight window is cut deep enough for a lamination of the snakewood to be added? I don't see any other way if it isn't showing in the grip.

I've seen old bear Recurves with I beams but of the same wood so you have toreally look to see it or with a similar colored wood so you have to really look to see it.

Here’s my theory.....
Riser consists of three ebony boards. One full length and two half length.

A thin snake wood veneer is sandwiched between the ebony pieces on the upper half in the sight window, but not the handle.

Butt joint is removed when shelf is cut in.

Something that has been bothering me, why is it called an "I" beam, when it's shaped like a lowercase "l" beam?

In our use it means three pieces laminated together for strength. Have no idea who started calling it an I beam.

Not sure why but I guess the « I » is the straightest uppercase letter of the alphabet.
Or it’s just that I-stuffs are kid of fancy these days !
