Different types of string silencers
« on: April 13, 2008, 03:58:00 PM »
I just realized I am in need of some string silencers for the bow I plan to use turkey hunting. I thought for sure I has some extra ones, but I can't locate them.

I don't want to have to order any as the shipping will probably cost a lot more than the silencers do.

I checked my tackle box to see if I had some skirting like cat whiskers.... no luck there.

I thought maybe I had some yarn....nope.

So now I am trying to come up with something else. I know many, many, years ago I made some out of leather that was fairly thin. They seem to work alright.

But I was wondering what else someone might have found to easily work.

Thanks!

Rubber bands?
Long, long afterward, in an oak I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end, I found again in the heart of a friend.

I'll second the rubber bands, or cut some strips of fur from an old pelt you might have.

If you want cat whiskers, I have 'em in a bunch of different colors.  Shipping will cost you a dollar.  E-mail me if interested.

The things already mentioned will work, or if you have an old string or some string material you can make a set from that.

Deer Hair from a White Tail Deer works for Me just fine. White belly hair also works from a hide you may have laying around.

Another Great string silencer is the hair from the tail of a Red or Gray Squirrel....ONE SHOT...

I use 1.5 inch pieces of leather boot lace.  Let them sit overnight in the SnoSeal or Pitch Blend to waterproof them and just slip them into the string.  You can serve them into place or just let the twist of the string hold them.

An old 18" bungee cord has a lifetime supply of rubber cat's whiskers inside it. I personally prefer the wool yarn (100% wool) from the fabric store $6.00 will buy you enough to make a gsazillion of them. A pair takes about 20 min. to make up and install using either material.
Younger money, faster whiskey, older women and more horses.....or something like that..
