Ben Pearson Cougar set up.
« on: February 06, 2020, 01:09:59 PM »
Howdy, folks.
I acquired a Cougar to set up for grandkids. The chart of logos that RJones kindly posted indicates that is of 1957 manufacture. I was wondering if anyone know whether I should set it up with a shelf or an elevated rest. Also, what would be a good brace height at which to start tuning? The bow is labeled as 64”, and the string with which it arrived is probably too short: it measures 58”, and leaves a string to grip distance of over 9 inches. That looks excessive to these longbow shooting eyes, but .  .  .?  I am also guessing that I will need to get some Dacron for new string.
Thanks

string should be no more than 3 1/2 to 3 inches shorter than the 64" bow length. Brace height would probably be better at 6 1/2 to 7 1/2. Maybe a Flemish string so you can twist it up or down to play with the brace height and find what works best. Shooting off the shelf would probably be easiest for the kids.

I meant no more than 3 1/2 to 4 inches shorter than 64 for the string.

I believe BP didn't start naming his bows until 1958 so perhaps a slight discrepancy with your '57 guess-date?

Yeah, I believe you’re right, the bow looks more modern than those photos. I tried to attach some photos, but obviously I am a technologically challenged troglodyte.
I did make contact with a gentleman who had worked for the company: he described it as a semi-recurve, but did say the recommended brace height was 7 - 7 1/2 “. He couldn’t precisely date the bow, but did recommend off the shelf set up.
Thanks for the info.
