possible to move to GA
« on: February 16, 2020, 04:46:16 PM »
well it looks like if something doesn't happen here rather quickly, my job is going to be moving me to Georgia. The new facility is in college park and i have to start looking for a place to live. In the few talks i've had with people from the facility, and other things it looks like i'm probably going to be settling somewhere between Mcdonough and Covington region. I have absolutely no idea about anything in GA except the few times i've been to the facility. So, couple quick hunting questions if anyone knows this region....is there any pig hunting close or will i need to be prepared to go more south? also, does anyone know if there deer and turkey hunting opportunities there and again, how far i may have to go to find any. Again, total rookie here for southern living. I'm used to hunting PA game lands/state forest. feel free to PM me if you would like.

I expect the winters will be a tad milder.
I can afford to shoot most any bow I like.  And I like Primal Tech bows.

Plenty of deer....plenty.  Hogs be close. I'm just not familiar enough if that area to tell you how thick the hogs would be in that general area.

If you move down closer to Covington, you will be able to find some good deer, turkey, and hog hunting. I grew up in Monticello in Jasper County (next door to Newton County), so I know the hunting is good, and there is plenty of public land available. I am not familiar with the hunting prospects as you go closer to Atlanta. All of Central Georgia has good hunting and accessible land. Plus, it is a pleasant place to live.

Here is the DNR site for public lands:
https://georgiawildlife.com/locations/wrd

Also set-up an account with the DNR to start applying for Quota hunts (most hunts applications will begin in July and applications close on Sept. 1). Most of the Quota Hunts will require several years of priority (rejection) points before you will be selected.

Oconee WMA has a good amount of bow hunting available. The Ossabaw Quota Hunts are a great experience and the State Park Hunts are simply fun.

I moved from upstate NY 18 months ago, now living in Northeast Georgia. It’s a lot different than up north with a bunch to learn on how things are done. Do your research on the seasons and what’s open when. WMA areas are not the same so you need to read carefully. I’m glad I moved south but still have not got the hunting sorted out.

I grew up in PA, had a hunting camp in the Allegheny NF for 10 wonderful years but moved to SC in 92 for my job.  Took me several years to figure out southern hunting.  Have since moved around several times and now live in NC, but have hunted and/or worked in both Carolinas, Georgia and Florida.  Of those states, Georgia by far has the best hunting on public land.  I come to GA to hog hunt on public land every year.  Gonna hog hunt on public land later this week in fact.

The single best thing you can do is join the Traditional Bowhunters of Georgia and attend their summer banquet, 3-d shoots and especially their group hunts.  From that, you’ll meet some great trad bowhunters and learn all you need to be successful while bowhunting in GA.

hey thanks everyone for your responses. Appreciate the insights and tips. It will be a big move if it happens but i've never hog hunted and i'm planning on enjoying some good bass and catfishing. Thanks again
