Well as Terry has already alluded to it was a great camp this year. We had people from all parts of the country, and we all got along great. Laughing, cutting up,and drinking! We did do some hunting also as the picture above shows. Everybody was happy about my kill, but Terry could really tell how excited I was when I got back to camp.
Jacob the guide at the camp turned me onto this spot where the hogs were coming in he thought before dark. So I went to sit in some old cattle pens with a water trough that was split between two lots of the pens. I put some 2x6 across the shoot in order to stand on and shoot over. Well the first day I saw a big black and white sow come in with about 8 piglets, she also had a young fifty pound hog with her. She didn't come in the front of the pens which would have given me a perfect shot. She went all the way around, and squeezed under the gate to get a drink. I couldn't get a shot because of the divider. It was funny while she got her front feet up on the trough to get a drink the piglets were trying to suck. I would not have shot her anyway because the piglets were too little. I would have shot the little fifty pounder with them though. I thought when they get done they will come out,and go to the corn, but they just left off to my east
I sat there probably another hour, and here come another group of them from the south. There was about 8 hogs in this group, but the wind was blowing right toward them and they never would come in
So I go out there the next day,and they had come back, and finished up the corn after I left. I walked around, and jumped a pretty good size hog that was bedded up while I was out stump shooting.
So fast forward to that afternoon. I drive out there, and dump some more of the molasses corn that Jacob had made up,and there was a coyote there getting a drink as I drove up.
There was going to be a cold front blowing in that night so I had all my cold weather gear. I get in the shoot, and started to get cold as the wind was blowing hard. I went to sit on the ground by the water trough because there was some stuff piled up on the other side of the fence that served as a wind block. Well just about dark I hear this really weird sound, and couldn't tell what it was. I see a glimpse of white, and realize it was the sow, piglets, and the little whatever it was. It was the piglets making the noise I heard. They came around the same way they had the day before, and came under the gate. So I was 2 yards away from them while they drank, that was very exciting! I could have shot over the fence as they left at the little fifty pounder, but didn't want to do the old Texas heart shot thing. They did the same thing they had done the day before, and left to the east, and didn't come to the corn. I knew however they hadn't winded me this time because I was so close to them.
I sit there another hour, and then got up and got myself back into the cattle shoot where I could shoot over the corn. The wind had died down after it got dark, but the temperature was dropping fast. I think it was a little after nine when I saw hogs coming in,and running everywhere. I rigged up a deal at the house for my green light that didn't end up working at all,and was too late to do anything else. So I saw three run up to this tire that had the corn in it. I put the light in the left side of my mouth turned it on pulled back and let it go.
Hogs went everywhere! I didn't know how good or bad the shot was because I dropped the light and went to cussing. I get it picked up,and I'm shining around and could see one hog off in the distance running in circles. More were coming up to the corn, but I thought I better see if I got the one,and not try on another one when other people could come and hunt there.
I had to bang on some metal around there to get the hogs to leave that were there grunting and growling in the bushes
So when I was fairly satisfied they had left I got done, and made a run for the liquid cattle feeder, and jumped on it. I'm a little scared of hogs
As I got over that way I saw my arrow, and thought I had missed, but when I picked it up,I realized there was blood on it,and the tip broke off in the hog. I shined my light around and could see what I thought was a hog,but I waited until I saw it move. I got down and got the other side of it,and put another arrow in it. It let out a squeal, and I ran for cover. I could hear it weezing, and figured that had done the deal.
I took off with my light, and had made a perfect second shot. I loaded her up,and headed back to camp. I got to camp, and Terry,Joe,and Jacob were there. They all congratulated me,and like I said before I could tell Terry could tell how excited I was.
Jacob showed me a neat way to skin them. We found the broadhead high in the off side shoulder, but he also found the entrance of the first shot. It was low and tight to the shoulder. So I ended up making a better shot than I thought. The way he skinned it we didn't open it up so we didn't see exactly where it went.
