Hunting near Savannah G. this fall
« on: March 09, 2020, 05:32:06 PM »
I thought that I already posted on this but couldn't find anything. I will be in Savannah on military duty this fall for about 45 days. Looking for some local hunting for hogs. Some of the nearby bases are a little ways away but if I take my own vehicle I could get away on long weekends. We will be on a small Air National Guard base so no hunting there.

I don't know of any private places or public places other than Wild Things.

I was going to say Ft Hunter/Stewart, but it has been 52 years since I went to cobra school there.  Things may have changed.

Ft Stewart for sure!  Lots of hogs there and a cool place, good fishing too and you can even camp there and rent a boat or canoe.  Only problem is that you might find hogs in a unit one day and not be able to hunt them the next day, if that unit is closed for training.

Tuckahoe WMA....northeast of Sylvania on the Savana river 15,000 acres. Basically right across the river from Wild Things in SC.

As far as I know, you can't even pull over and piss off the side of the road without them coming to check you out.

Looks like Ft. Stewart is a 46 min drive from where i will be, not bad!

Archery Hunters
All archery hunters must successfully complete a qualification session which are now available by appointment only, contact the Pass and Permit Office at Fort Stewart (912 -435-8061) or the Skeet Range at HAAF (912-315-9354).  Shooters must hit 2 out of 3 arrows in the target at both 20 and 30 yards.  A $5 processing fee will be charged.

I may be wrong, but I think the qualification test no longer applies. you need to register through "isportsman" and take a quick safety test. You must check in and out of an area via the isportsman app as well. Make sure you check out at the end of the day or hunting privileges are revoked for a few days.

Shot my first deer at Ft. Stewart 43 years ago...and with a Herters recurve...on the run.
Saw lots of pigs too but rookie hunters kept screwing things up for me. But that's another story.

So I assume wild things is a pay to hunt operation?

Jim, check with the Savannah Wildlife Refuge(Federal). It's just across the Savannah River from Savannah. Lots of hogs there. Don't know what their seasons are but I'm sure there is info available.

Yes sir,....was ran as Ray's Hog Haven for years, then the owner made some changes and renamed it to Wild Things. The owner, Andrew Harper then died tragically and I heard it was still in operation but have no clue about it since Andrew's passing.

I can tell you it is a beautiful place and I assume with the same accommodations.

That land will only be open during any hunting season, it is not private, therefore not open year round.....but you need to check for yourself to make sure cause I don't know if the regs have changed.

"Wild Things" is no longer, the property and camp is still huntable through Cypress creek hunting. Andrew's son & daughter still own the property and Charlie is still tending it, they just lease it to cypress creek.

I really miss that place!
