Leather grip for longbow
« on: March 26, 2020, 01:01:39 AM »
Hi there, I want to try putting a pigskin leather grip on a Toelke whip with a thumb rest. I've done beavertail grips before but I'm not sure if pigskin can also be soaked. I usually soak beavertail in warm water before installing but I'm not sure if the pigskin can be treated the same way. I form the beavertail to the grip, then remove, trim and punch holes, put it back on with barge/contact cement and lace it. I'm hoping I can do the same with "normal" leather but would like suggestions from someone with more experience.

What would you do? Thanks! Pat

The only pigskin I have used was glove weight and it did not like getting wet. Do you have a hide?
For all I know there could be thicker sections on the back and shoulders like cow hide.

If the pig skin has been tanned you can wet it and it should form just like any other leather. The water may stain it but if you dye it first it shouldn't be noticeable.
Make the most of all that comes and the least of all that goes!
