How to cut Takedown Riser angles?
« on: April 11, 2020, 06:40:34 PM »
I used to always cut my angles out on the bandsaw then used a jointer to smooth and square them up.

Is there an easier way before I buy another jointer?

I don't have an edge sander or the room for one.

Table saw with a jig and then touch it up with a 12" disc sander...  Jointer could cause grain tear out...

An expensive crosscut device. A standard tablesaw mitre gauge with a homemade extended fence and sliding digital T-bevel will work as well.

Make a 3/4" plywood template with a table saw like the guy's said or find someone to make a pattern for you. Get a robo sander and some double sided tape for a drill press if you have one and they will all come out the same. Use a thin double sided tape. ;)

You will be way more accurate with a sled and table saw. You have to flip the block for the second cut so the sides need to be parallel with each other.

Thanks everyone, I probably will make a sled of some sort.

Mark, I was just looking at those robo flush sanders last night and I plan on getting the 3x3" and the 2x3".

Unless they have changed those Robo sanders they in my opinion junk. The ones I had had way too much give in the rubber under the sandpaper. And if you drill press has any play in it you lose another tolerance.

I made a simple jig like the one in this video and it worked great. I used some small 2x4 scraps as clamps with a rabbet cut on one edge because of the thickness of the riser block.

When I attempted to make a TD riser I used a jig for cutting tapered table legs on the table saw. I got the idea from a fellow woodworker.
