I met Dale in 1986 when I purchased my first bow from him. He was a master artist, a kind and gentle person, and one of the finest bowyers in existence. Simply put, in my opinion, he produced the Stradivarius of all recurve bows. We became good friends and arranged to meet a few times. Dale always went the extra mile for a client and never, never cut corners on his product. I spoke of him with the highest regard and respect to everyone who I knew was looking for another recurve. He told me if I kept sending him clients he would call me his "East Coast Rep", and some time later he put that on a bow he built for me. In 2018 I asked him to build me another one piece bow even though he said he was retiring. I persisted and he built the bow, and wrote on it " my last one piece bow". that is the kind of guy he was.
After he fell and broke his hip I called him about twice a month to chat. All the conversations went the same way. first we complained about our aches and pains, then how we had to shoot lighter weights and then Dale would start telling stories and we ended the conversation laughing. We were on the phone FRIDAY APRIL 24th, talking about turkey hunting. Dale saw good in just about everything. the traditional community lost one of its greatest, and there is a new star in the heavens. Rest in peace Dale.
