After reading “In Pursuit ...” I’m real impressed with Mr Rothhaar’s writing style and I’m not into Chapter one yet

There is a lot to be learned from Rogers writings.  He was a down to earth fellow that was totally dedicated to the craft.
Whom virtue unites death cannot separate.

I reread em every couple of years.  Him and the Wensel’s stuff.  They are responsible for this addiction I suffer from.   :biglaugh:

I’ll read Wensel’s, Asbell and Rothhaar a bunch.   E Donnel Thomas also. Great stuff all.

“Baby Huey” wow!!!  I spent my 20’s in IN and this book brings back memories.  One 9 1/2 Year old that just missed book, but weighed 268#, hunting friends farm and he told me follow the tractor road till it crosses the creek, then go up ridge on the right to the top and sit down by the big beech tree.  Took this buck @1 hour before dark.  Even a blind hog finds an acorn once in a while.

This specific book, and subsequent conversations with Roger, caused me pack up my wife and young son in SC and move to Ohio in ‘96, where I enjoyed 6 years of wonderful deer hunting.  Like Roger, I came to know several handfuls of really big bucks very well and really enjoyed pursuing them, but unlike Roger I wasn’t good enough to actually put a tag on the bigger ones...later I visited Roger at his farm in Iowa and continued to learn from him until his recent passing.

Indeed.  The last several chapters are food for thought.

I own and read everything he's written.  Years ago I was coming home Thanksgiving weekend from Indiana and found myself driving by his place in Ohio.  Like an idiot I stopped and he came to the door, let my wife and I in and got out some home made videos of Spring bear hunting in Canada while his family had dinner!  What a great man and influence!

Longbowman, I recently found an article that Roger wrote as part of a book by Don Higgins (Real world whitetail icons), in which he detailed the trials and tribulations as well as successes of his Iowa farm.  When I visited with Roger, we spent hours looking at shed antlers, videos and mounts from the bucks on his farm; he hinted that he wasn’t well received by the locals but I never knew the details until this article.  Great read and worth buying the book just for it; the other whitetail masters highlighted in the book also provide great info.

Luv Mr. Rothhaar's writing from the beginning of early Bowhunter magazine, I think entitled "Buttons to Bucks" (May even have it saved somewhere) ... Have both his books, GREAT writings...

My favorite line from Whitetail Magic, "few have what it takes."

It's taken me a long long time, but now I get it. Big bucks are different. They act different. It took me committing to a single animal for several seasons before I could understand that. Roger was way ahead of the curve in my opinion. Still, I see a few regular guys that I know, killing HUGE bucks consistently. They keep hunting the same farms year after year after year. Mostly, they just wait. They know the right time to be there and then they just wait.

So that is my plan for November. I know that buck I'm after will come by on or about Nov. 15th during shooting hours.

Thank you Roger Rothhaar!

Justin
