Was wondering what to expect with some arrows I’m making up.  Found some shafts that are tapered on both ends at 27” and with a Woody weight measure 28 1/4” BOP.  My draw must be shorter with this D-shape longbow pulling 70#ish at my DL.  I pressure fit a Broadhead on and was able to draw without knocking it off, that is short for me.  Need to remeasure DL in morning.  Shaft with stain, 3 coats of polyacrylic and nock is @525-530 grains.  75 grain Woody weight.  190 grain tip.  That’s 825-830 without fletching.  These must be some of tapered Maple I had???  I’ll launch one tomorrow to see what I have created!!!   Who knows maybe they’ll fly.

That is a heavy arrow. Let us know how it flies at 10 and 30 yards. You do not want a horrible trajectory. I know Clay Hayes suggests a 10-11 GPP weighted arrow (mentioned in one of his YouTube videos).

Need to know the spine weight of the shafts. Without that we can’t help you. But with 265 grains upfront out of a 70# bow. Those shafts better spine over 90# or more.

Not sure what spine arrows I have and no way to check.  I’ll fill you in.

Might be ok at 10 yards after that i suspect they are gonna be dirt divers lol.  If they dont work as an arrow you might be able to throw them as a spear.  :biglaugh: that's a heavy arrow.
Nothing clears a troubled mind like shooting a bow.

I don't know that there'll be any issue with trajectory. It's a 70 lb straight longbow, which are known to do well with heavier arrows. In for the results.

Ok, 15 bareshafted at @6 yards.  Tapered arrow 27 1/2” BOP.  190 grain FP.  740-750 grain total weight.   Didn’t add 75 grain WW.  Two tad left nock high right. When I bored a hole and really focused on release and follow through, it was hard to say only 2-3” out of foam maybe nock a smidge high.  But it snaps to target.

Bit more distance tomorrow.  May back down front end weight to get better flight.  Even with a Zwickey this would be a hammer.  Or judo points.

I’m with TD these arrows move out, found some 28 1/2” that may be a better fit for hunting arrows.

190 grain FP at 11-12 yards and poor release on 2 shots sends if left with ock high. More focused better release and arrow is close to POA but still a bit nock high.

Would backing down point weight help.

Dropped to 160 grain FP and at 12 yards arrow almost hit target sideways up and down.

I'm liking how heavy those are... I'm working on some right now with Douglas fir (untapered). Depending on which woody weight I go with out of the test kit, should be between 680 and 730. (Almost 14 gpp with my bow). Pretty excited. Making up two dozen hopefully with some flu-flus included too!

Got my Go To longbow back and the first bare shaft through this 66.5# bow from @11 yards with 160 grain tip snapped off the last 14” of 70/75# shaft as it hit the target.  Guess I’ll go heavier.  Save these for light Zwickey heads.

It is getting interesting trying to get woodies that will push a 190 VPA or Grizzly Instinct head takes a heavy shaft that weighs 600 grains bare.  Made up at 29” will be 860+.  We’ll see how it goes and perhaps I’ll be shooting 2315 or 2219 at 620-670 grains.  But I will give wood shafts a go, they should be good to 20 yards.  And they’ll hit with a THUMP!!!

Still experimenting with Leopard Wood and Mahogany, but with 190 grain heads they tend a tad nock high.  I’ll add WW 75 grain and see.

Have been trying some other things with this bow and finally got to test the 75 grain WW and 190 grain FP with the mahogany arrow.  28 3/4” VON to BOP and @865 grains.  Flies pretty quick from 66#+ D/R longbow.  Shooting at a small green leaf in front of target and hits right behind leaf every time from 7/10/12/15 yards.  With a thump!!!  This should make a good hog arrow.  Getting excited about these heavy arrows.  Switched back to 4 arrow EFA again, this quiver seems to fit the snuggest of the four I’ve tried, also the lightest.  I have a GFA or GN sidekick to carry extras as needed.
