Tip Overlays
« on: June 23, 2020, 08:07:34 PM »
I bought an old recurve a yard sale (posted a request for help to identify on prior post) and have stripped her down but it is missing a tip overlay on one of the limbs.  I'd really like to restore/recon myself but have never attempted to create and install tip overlays.  Is this something that's reasonably easy?  Is there instructional info out there somewhere (went on you tube but there was only 2 or 3 videos and one was incomplete)?  Can I buy the material somewhere as a kit?  Do you think it would be easier/better to contact a Bowyer and just have it done right?  Any info would be appreciated

It's quite easy to do.  I believe 3-Rivers sells tip overlay material.  Will likely be difficult to match what you already have so may need to remove the other tip and replace both of them if you want them to match.  If you do that, can use wood, fiberglass, micarta, bone, antler, etc.  Might be able to find some of that stuff at a local craft store.

Tape off the area you don't want glue on, sand the tip lightly with about 80 grit paper on a sanding block so you sand it evenly, then epoxy the tip overlay in place.  Shape with a file and sand paper when it's cured.

The main thing with tip overlays is to be sure that both glue surfaces are well mater. Also, rubber bands are great to hold the overlay in place while the glue cures.
Make the most of all that comes and the least of all that goes!
