Hey folks! Dan had me make an account so I could tell my KennyM lease story of the first deer down in camp. The biggest challenge here is definitely getting a shot off with the all the eyes on you! This was the case last night, and it started before I even made it into the woods. I decided to hunt on the south tract out of my saddle and there happened to be a six point standing right where I wanted to enter the woods. We had a face off and he won, bounding back into the woods. I follow him in and find a good oak with a tight “y” trunk all the way up with plenty of cover. As I was hanging my first stick I had a doe and a spike come to 25 yards and I froze as they tried to get a better idea of what I was. They eventually trotted off to about 55 yards to watch me hang my sticks and climb up. I waved goodbye as I climbed onto my platform. Before I could pull my bow up I had a doe come in behind me at 15 yards. I waited until she worked her way behind a tree and hurriedly pulled my bow up. Now I just have to get turned around to face her, no problem. OOPS, haven’t had a chance to trim all that cover so I can have shooting lanes, or even turn around. I find a limb to hang my bow on until I can get my pack off my back to get my saw out, she won’t be here long anyway. Couple minutes go by and another doe and her dawn show up and the three of them have a meet up and they eventually amble off to the CRP field. I finally get my pack off and my bow hung on my hanger and my saw out and whaddaya know, a spike and a forky get to sparring 60 yards away. The spike wins. I know a few deer are in the ditch but the clocks ticking so I trim 14 branches anyway. Finally ready for a kill shot! Over the course of the next hour 3 doe come within 20 yards but none want to show me their vitals, selfish of them if you ask me. Half hour before last light the forky and spike were back and the forky was nice enough to stand broadside at 17 yards, and I was nice enough to zing an arrow right over his back. He returned the favor by standing dead still and let me get a clean pass through. He made it 25 yards and fell over in sight. That’s my first buck, and my first deer with a recurve. By the way, the encounter with the eight pointer was a clean miss and him running just out of range to tease me. This is a great place to hunt and a great cabin to stay in, I’m having a blast!
