Duck Hunting with the Longbow
« on: September 21, 2020, 07:46:41 AM »

I was invited to Geuydan Louisiana by a friend to hunt teal on his place. I said man I haven’t shot a shot gun in many years and I’d really like to Use my Longbow. He said that’s fine there’s plenty of birds! Well I emptied the quiver twice and fetched my arrows as birds kept trying to come into the decoys lol I think it was my twentieth arrow I finally connected! Now I must warn y’all I got a little excited hahahaha Here’s the video proof that I hit that teal in the air!

That is really cool Corey, those suckers are hard enough to hit with a shotgun let alone a bow.

Thats awesome! I used to hunt green wing and blue wing teal all the time when I grew up in Texas on the coast. Those things are small and fast. Can't imagine trying to shoot one with a longbow. Great video.

I've duck hunted with a shotgun every year for more than 50 years.  Normally I’m after something with a little more meat on it than a teal, like a mallard or a sprig, but occasionally teal and widgeon are all that come by, and so I’ll take them.  I would say that teal are the hardest to hit of all the ducks I regularly hunt because of their small size, speed, and irregular flight.  Every year I think about hunting ducks with my bow, and every year I let my greed for ducks in my freezer override my desire to hunt them with a bow.  I could bow hunt them in my own swimming pool if I wanted to, but that seems a little unsporting (not to mention probably illegal) so I haven't done that either.

Congratulations on a very challenging shot!

Here is a mallard pair in my pool being eyed by my dog:

You've got two ways to go when hunting flying birds. Go for the meat and use a gun or go for the fun and use your bow. If you chose the bow then you just need to go for it. Don't try too hard, just relax and go for it... negative thoughts have no place in the wing shooting game.

I've shot, ducks, quail, pheasant, chukar and I can tell you it's no time for form work. Just focus and shoot. You just might surprise yourself.

If at all possible forget flu flu's. In my opinion they are a handicap.

Congrats, that's awesome! Was out chasing them last weekend and they're tough to hit with a shotgun, let alone a longbow!
