I appreciate everyone's concern and ask for you all to keep us in your prayers. Thank you. I'll just give some basics for Gene and hope he can add some details if he has time. His wife is not doing well. They have three grown kids and five grandkids to help some but Gene is Donna's primary caregiver 24/7. His major problem is stress and lack of sleep. On top of that he got a total knee replacement on Aug. 5th and has to go to PT 3 times a week still. One positive note is he's recently lost 25 lbs. A lot of people don't realize he hasn't hunted at all for the last two years. Just that fact alone is extremely tough on guys like us.
I'm doing fine basically. I also had some knee issues off and on for the last year but I'm doing much better now. On Sept. 8th my heart went back into AFib for the first time in years. I ended up in the ER for three days/ two nights. I had a "team" of three MDs and a cardiologist all agree on a plan and I seem to be fine now. Unfortunately they found I am now a verified diabetic and need to shoot myself up with insulin twice daily. I can't say it really bothers me other than it's a pain in the butt. They also juggled my meds, took me off a couple and added a couple. I want to publicly mention this. The one insulin prescription they wrote me an Rx for was going to be $198. / mth. I complained about it and they got it down to $160. Then I got checking around and found another brand of insulin (same stuff but different brand) ready?? $12. / month. I personally think that's criminal to charge elderly people $198. when the exact same thing is available for $12. You gotta watch them.
Within the med changes they had to put me "temporarily" back on warfarin (rat poison) which is a blood thinner. So now they tell me I'm a "bleeder." The good news is they told me (the one MD is an avid hunter) I should no longer field-dress deer; no caping heads; no more home butchering; and he even said I probably shouldn't drag big 'ol bucks out myself anymore. Frankly, I'm kinda liking this deal. I'm thinking of milking this deal out even if they take me off the meds.
The bad news is they have to monitor my blood every three days for awhile. Since the hospital is 20 miles one way and the appointments for tests and the results have been averaging three hours, it pretty much interferes with daily plans. Our season doesn't open until Oct. 1st. so hopefully things will settle by mid-Oct. I normally don't get serious until about the third week of October anyway. Right now I feel up to the task but I may need to adjust some accordingly since I'll need to slow my pace down on entrance/exit.
I anticipate a great season in Iowa and I also have an outstanding hunt planned in south Texas later. So, here's to us all getting the biggest bucks of our lives. Shoot straight and stand upwind of the Chinese virus guys.
