Swallowed my pride...
« on: October 13, 2020, 11:31:21 AM »
And made the switch to 3 Under and gap!
And I have never been more confident!!
I have always considered myself a “decent” shot and I have always shot split finger and instinctive. That was the way I was taught when I was a kid. But for some reason I have really really struggled with consistency this summer.  It really got in my head, So bad in fact that I wasn’t even confident in going hunting.
After several conversations with our sponsored shooter Shiloh Butts I decided to give gap a try. Which also meant going to 3 under. The first few days was really hard to break the habit of shooting instinctive, but I instantly started shooting better groups.
Day 4 and I’m as confident as I’ve ever been in my shooting!!!
I know it’s not for everyone but I can’t deny the results that it has made for me!

Your bows shoot great 3 under, Randy!

What is your nock point height set at?

I run my 58" bow at 7/8"

Curious what yours is set at?  Probably a little lower because of the 17/64 diameter on the FMJ's.

Now get out there and kill something.
I can afford to shoot most any bow I like.  And I like Primal Tech bows.

Glad to see it is working for you! I went thru some really bad times recently that drove me to a wheel bow for a while. I’ve tried 3-under and gap a couple times over the years, and just not been able to figure it out. Good luck hunting this season!

Lack of confidence, can certainly shake you. ESPECIALY during Deer Season!!!
I've shot split finger instinctive for years. Then, 3under and gap. Back and forth....

Going back to my wheel days, and sight pins...
I'd be dialed right in! Then one day, couldn't hit water if I fell out of a boat?
I'd screw around with the sight pins, arrows going who knows where?
Sooner or later, yank the sights off and throw them away!!!
Lesson learned...?? Sometimes, you just have a bad day, and need to hang it up!!

I tossed the wheels after a couple of years, and went back to a recurve.
If I was "good" I was GOOD!! If I was off, I chalked it up to a bad day....
Another thing... Many will slam me for it, but I NEVER practice during Deer Season.

Don't need them gremlins in my head, when a Big Buck gives me that golden opportunity :archer:
I only shoot WOOD arrows... My kid makes them, fast as I can break them!

There is a fine line between Hunting, & Sitting there looking Stupid...

May The Great Spirit Guide Your Arrows..... Happy Hunting!!!

Fixed the picture for ya Randy.

I've shot 3 under string walking for 40 years on my recurves.

For my Osage longbows I build, I can not string walk, it will destroy the tiller, so I hold tight up against the arrow on those bows.

3 under is a deadly way to shoot, especially if you use the tip of the arrow as your front sight so to speak.

You are going to shoot better and better now.

I can't remember what Indian tribe it was but they shot 3 under hundreds of years ago.

You are going to be proud of your groups now:)

Did you change your anchor point Randy when you switched to 3 under?

Not surprised. Welcome to the club.

Roy, I read somewhere that the Apache Indians used 3 under and have also heard it referred to as the Apache grip. As well as it worked for them, I have never been able to be comfortable with it.

Smart move!  Once i discovered how much fun consistent accuracy was i found the way i shoot best and have kept at it.  For me, 3 under, middle finger corner of my mouth and gapping at the riser works.  This year i added a 550 gr arrow to my 40# bow ( see harvest thread) and tightened my gaps for the thickets i hunt.  Enjoy!

PS-- no pride to swallow.  In my experience, noe else cares where you put your fingers on the string until you beat them-- then the whining starts--- kusy accept it as applause.

Good stuff Randy.  I finally committed to making the switch this past spring and my accuracy and confidence has never been higher.

Yes,
I went from middle finger in corner of my mouth to my pointer finger.

I was shooting split and anchoring with my middle finger in the corner of my mouth and putting most of the pressure on my middle finger. I am now shooting 3under with my pointer in the corner of my mouth and applying most the pressure on my pointer finger.  Puts the arrow nock essentially in the same spot on my face but allows me to keep more pressure on the string with my pointer . with the higher nock height it gives me a better line of sight down the arrow and lessens the gap

That’s a nice group! I agree with others, find what works for you and own it! Can’t argue with those results.

Yes Sam, I thought it was the Apache tribe, thanks.
