HUNTING WITH MY GRANDSON
« on: October 20, 2020, 08:53:50 PM »
I was fortunate enough to be drawn for a zone north of our town.  This area is bowhunting only for antlerless deer.  I decided to add an extra strap on stand to the tree mounting it off my right shoulder.  My grandson Erik is 11 and accompanied me several times to see why grandpa loves hunting whitetails so much.  He was there to observe.  Last Saturday afternoon we went out for a hunt.  Nothing showed as it began to get close to quitting time.  I whispered to my grandson we would give it a couple more minutes and then call it a day.  No sooner than I told him that and here come 4 does toward us from our left.  They were really taking their time nosing around and feeding.  Finally, one of them moved into the clear and gave me about a 15 yd shot, right behind the left elbow angling a bit forward.  She dashed up the slope about 60 yds and turned to look back.  It went down right there and did a couple rolls down the hill.  Probably all of 5 or 6 seconds after the shot, the deer was down.  It was great having my grandson there!.  We got down and followed the blood trail so he could see what that looked like.  He helped me by holding the doe in position for field dressing.  We did some identifying of internal organs as well.  We got the deer sled and he helped me get the deer back to the truck.  It was a great evening!  Erik said he wants to take up bowhunting!
I would add the bow I used was a Goshawk longbow made for me by Chad Holm.  He was such an awesome bowyer and great guy.  I will be using his bows this fall in his honor and as a memorial to him.

Hats off to you, sir! Great job showing your grandson 'how it's done' and extra points for using a bow built by Chad.   :clapper:

That's awesome! I still remember being with my grandpa the first time I ever saw someone harvest a deer. Something he'll never forget!
