Timber Shark
« on: November 24, 2020, 09:24:54 PM »
Anyone have any experience with the timber shark? I know the tree sharks have a following but I have no experience with Simmons heads. I like that the timber sharks are solid as opposed to the tree shark. But I see they are smaller cutting width. Thanks.

I’ve never shot them but I don’t care for the bluntness of the head and think better penetration will be had with a more streamline head.  I shoot treesharks and tigersharks and like Mec said they are deadly.

Tim, I'm not sure what you mean by bluntness of the head. To me the timber shark just looks like a solid version of the tree shark. Only not as wide.

Maybe I’m not saying it right - they just seem short and stubby to me.  I think a longer head would be more effective and would cut with less force.

I have some swamp Sharks.  I've bent two of them.  One on a turkey and one the other day on a pig.where it passed through and hit a root bending the tip.  The one I have left is the last one I'll have. Ever.

Wonder why they bent so easily?

Don't like hearing this better contact dave I have NEVER had issues with heads bending unless he changed his carbon steel supplier but I harvested a doe with a swampshark hard quartering away and hit offside shoulder and had zero issues touched head back up and back in the quiver again

I talked to him after the first one.  He offered to replace it but it bent up high and I straightened it and killed a couple pigs with it.
Too many other heads out there to worry about it for me.

Hitting bone.
For tonight I’ll use a sample of 54 deer shot 2010 season through this season since we have a lot of documentation. These were harvested in an urban unit woods behind houses setting.
We only use Longbows for Whitetails most in the 60 65# range
Most shots distance 12 to 15 yards
Closest 3 yards
Furthest 23 yards

These are all shot with Sharks - glue on - a few 135s - most were 160s
100% recovery
Most were Does weighing 80#
Other Deer weighed 80# to 130# with only two bigger in the 160# / 170# range
35 were broadside double lung hits cutting ribs entry and exit
8 I hit in front of the shoulder cutting lower neck 7 died within 40 yards 1 went 50 on these the broadhead cut arteries, veins, esophagus- one of these deer turned towards me and the broadhead followed the neck bones down 20 inches
penetration that’s the deer that went 50 - big buck.
A few were broadside liver hits easy bloodtrail
Around 10 went through Scapula some hitting opposite shoulder. A couple of these broke the opposite leg but most Common was the broadhead exiting the opposite armpit.
2 were Texas heart shots ?! And neither made it more than 70 yards painted blood trail easy recovery. Both had leg bone damage around the hip.
1 hit the spine - glanced down and split lungs - out in 10 seconds in its tracks

No known negative outcomes due to hitting bone.
Massive blood trails all fun no worries.
We have seen some ferrules off spec since 1998 during several different owners.
Centaur Short Mags my opinion is the best broadhead and it is a simply improved Shark.

I shot a axis doe with one in September.  16 yards from a ten foot tripod and my lower limb separated at the fade on the shot.  She pulled a Ninja and it hit her behind the last rib on her right side and exited at the back of the front shoulder on the left.   Arrow looked good but no blood trail.  I found her easily as her herd mates had stayed around where she went down barking for about 10 minutes and a few minutes later a whitetail was blowing in the same local.  She contorted so hard the exit was higher than the entrance and probably why the blood trail wasn't there.
However she was down and out quickly and where she went down there was blood everywhere.
I don't doubt people have success with them.  They make a big gash and I like that.  That said I tried them and although they sharpen easily and I've taken some pigs with them I just didn't see what I had hoped for and the confidence level isn't there.

Cory’s post is on point. Based on what Simmons sells now I would go with the glue on Treeshark.  The old screw on Treeshark was similar to this swamp shark and timber shark. The screw on Treesharks were notorious for bending behind the ferrule where the blades aren’t attached, even on good hits.  I have not bought sharks in about 8 years as I switched to the superior Centaur heads. Battle axes and short mags. I still have a few glue on sharks in the rotation but I have several dozen Centaurs I bought before they were discontinued. Once I use these up I will buy more glue on Treesharks.  The deer below I shot with a short mag from a 64# GN Bushbow. Broadhead broke the offside leg bone and punched out the other side a couple of inches. No damage to the Broadhead.

Have downed 6 turkeys, a bobcat and a dozen whitetails with the Tree Sharks the past 5 years...have only had great results....actually, had a Tree Shark short classic blood trail on 200# 8 pt yesterday evening.

I do own a set of Timber Sharks. They have not been tested...not so motivated to try them on deer since pass thru's have been the norm from 42# bows.

Ive only used the Tiger Sharks in the glue on and the newer screw on which is slightly wider, very slightly . I have had the two biggest blood trails ever with any animal one was a big whitetail buck and the other a big muley buck . The mule buck ended up having a broken rear leg bone just below the socket with no damage to the head but we did have one screw on bend just in front of the ferrel . The screw on is not as durable as the glue on and I don't think they make glue ons anymore .

Bumping this thread to see if anyone else has some insight on this head. I picked up a pack and have them flying great. I’m a little concerned about structural integrity.
