Rabbit oppotunity.
« on: November 26, 2020, 05:56:31 AM »
Now I love my bowhunting, but if asked what's my favorite thing to hunt, I'd have to say I've got two things I'd prefer to hunt over pretty much anything. I absolutely love to hunt Buffalo and Rabbits.

With the easing of the Covid travel restrictions over here, I've been itching to get out to hunt something.

Even at the best of times, bowhunting opportunities here in the State where I live are extremely limited.  All we are allowed to legally bowhunt are Rabbits and Hares, if you can find any. Rabbits are often pretty thin on the ground, and Hares even more so.

Well, last night, I had a lovely elderly, very well spoken lady call me and ask me to come and hunt rabbits in her and her husbands 10 acre English garden.

They don't like firearms, but they were more than happy too invite me, the only bowhunter they had heard of, to come and help reduce their rapidly expanding rabbit population.

This is a first for me, and it's a real treat.

I'm really looking forward to heading over this Saturday and introducing myself.

Hopefully more stories to come.

Best
Lex
Good hunting to you all.
May the wind be your friend, and may your arrows fly true,
Most of all, may the appreciation and the gratitude of what we do keep us humble......

That's a cool opportunity.  Looking forward to the reports and pics!  Good hunting!
I can afford to shoot most any bow I like.  And I like Primal Tech bows.

Well, I went over to the property and met the owners, lovely older couple. Turns out the garden isn't 10 acres, only about 2 acres, but they have another 8 acres of long long grass, in between some bush and their neighbors garden. And quite a few rabbits, did I mention that?

Had a blast sneaking through the grass along the edge of the gardens and fences, trying to spot a rabbit before it spotted me, darn hard to do that. But I managed to miss one, took some fur off the butt of another that blasted off from under my feet, and then I nailed one as it sat by its burrow. Unfortunately it managed a couple of kicks and it kicked itself down the said burrow before I could grab it. Couldn't recover it.

But, all in all, a terrific evening. Got to chase some rabbits, and met a couple of really lovely people.

They said "Come back any time you want, and just turn up, don't worry about calling" How great is that??? I will text them though, just to make sure.

More will no doubt follow, and hopefully a picture or two.

A standing invitation is always great. It also says good things about you, too. I never had access to a place with decent rabbit population, but it sounds like fun.

Well, I think I might have found a bit of a groove this evening.

Took my 75lb Blackwidow longbow for a wee wander through and around the garden of the older couple, along with 880 grain woodys and my homemade rabbit smackers.

Missed 4 and got 4 for the hour and a half walk. Didn't loose or break any arrows either.

Top evening  :goldtooth:

And my "Rabbit Smackers", simply a hardened 1/4" washer silver soldered to a 160 grain field point. Weigh 190 grains. They certainly "Smack" out of a 75lb bow  :goldtooth:

Perhaps share some wonderful rabbit dish with the owners and get written in the will.

Congrats

Thanks guys

Charlie, I did offer actually, but they politely declined.

Bowguy, there used to be huge populations of rabbits here in Australia 50-60 years ago, but with programs of ripping warrens, and gassing etc, along with introducing diseases like Mixamotosis and Calisi, now-a-days rabbits can be hard to find in anything like huntable numbers, around here anyway. Usually only see 1 or 2 if you are lucky to see any.

So I'm certainly very blessed to have a place like this offered to me, and less than 20 minutes from home too.
