Complete Shoulder Replacement
« on: December 02, 2020, 09:04:55 PM »
Tomorrow morning at 10:30am I have a complete shoulder replacement.  Too many years of sports, law enforcement and shooting heavy bows.  It will be a tough rehab but I will be back.  I hope to get back to 40 -45# by next hunting season.  At almost 72 I don't know how many I have left.  Here we go.

A prayer for you, your surgical team and your physical therapist.   May God bless you all and your recovery be complete and swift.
I can afford to shoot most any bow I like.  And I like Primal Tech bows.

A prayer for a quick recovery. Just remember do what the Doc tells you. Old guys heal slower than those kids.

Got both shoulders repaired as a young guy. Law Ennf career derailed...went into corrections. Came back to shoot heavy compounds. Now doing light trad. 40-.....45max. Its all you need. Like they said....do what doc says. In your recovery check out arginine and ornithine for building back muscle. It can be done!

Good luck with the surgery.  Just found out this summer why my bow shoulder has been given me grief bone on bone.  The Doc said a replacement would only last 4 or 5 years because I'm very active.

Good luck with your surgery and rehab. I am also 72, and I had my right shoulder replaced in July. I am back to shooting 45# comfortably.
You will need to take it slow, and the healing process is lengthy. Complete healing period is 9-12 months.
If you follow your Dr.s instructions, and are diligent with post surgery exercises, hunting should not be a problem for next season.
Let me know if I can answer any questions you might have.

Best wishes for a successful surgery and a full and complete recovery. Do all the rehab, but don't get more aggressive than the medical folks recommend. I had shoulder surgery several years ago, but it was nothing like your replacement. However, with your determined attitude, I think you will be back by next season. Good luck and get well soon!

Is it your bow-arm shoulder or your string-side shoulder? Like Terry said, I have had both replaced and the experience/rehab is a bit different with the bow-arm shoulder being a longer recovery. You will get back to 40-45 easily if you take your time, do the rehab, and then become a regular at the gym to stay strong.

Make sure to use plenty of ice in the first few weeks after the surgery, and take your pain medications according to the doctor's recommendations.

Let me know if you have any questions. I will be happy to help out.

Joe,

This one is his draw arm, the bow arm will be done later.

Dave: That's the order that I had my shoulders replaced -- draw arm then bow arm. The bow arm shoulder is a tougher recovery because pressing movements are not good for the replacement parts. It takes a very long time to rebuild enough muscle to stabilize the shoulder. Nevertheless, with good rehab and a steady and smart gym strengthening and maintenance routine things should be good. I am strong and stable with 45 pounds, and sometimes shoot 50 pounds just for the exercise.

Brother, you have to check out "Crossover Symmetry" for your rehab. My son got it for me for Father's Day, my shoulders are totally trashed from 20 yrs military then 20 yrs as a Farrier. It worked miracles for my shoulders, I believe it put shoulder surgery off for another 10 yrs., at least.  The whole system is about shoulder rehabilitation and it's great.
