Form Critique please
« on: December 15, 2020, 06:53:44 AM »
I'm working on finding back tension.  It's my unicorn.  I have no idea what it feels like, but I recently heard a suggestion that I should be pushing my bow string elbow backwards towards my scapula, so I've been trying that.  What I have found is, if done correctly, my string hand doesn't jump away from my face, and my arrow typically finds its mark.  I very recently started consciously practicing back tension so it takes a lot of concentration on my part, and I don't always achieve what I want.  (In hindsight, I should probably be doing this very close to the target to I don't have to concentrate on aiming.)

I've also found that I need some work on my bow hand.  If you watch the video, it appears as though the bow is jumping to the left.  Not sure what's causing that? Maybe too much tension in my grip?  Here's a couple videos, any critique would be appreciated.  I feel as though the last shot in the video was my best.

Not bad,  YES! Shoot up close to work on it.
A couple of suggestions.
Keep your bow arm perpendicular to your spine.  When shooting at a low target, establish the perpendicular to the spine THEN bend at the waist to come to the target.  That will help with your bow hand movement.
Second, lead the release with the elbow, that's what will complete your shot.  right now, your elbow moves after the release, it doesn't lead it.
It takes some practice but you're close.

Thank you Arne, I was hoping you’d see this. I have my first formal shooting lesson Saturday after trying to figure it out on my own for a number of years.

Back tension comes from both sides, drawing, and bow arm.  It's a balance.  Having the bow arm in correct position eliminates a lot of the bow drifting left, can't really tell much because the long sleeve covers the bow arm.  Try drawing your "air bow".  Once in position, bend your elbow 90 degrees.  If your hand comes up vertically, near your head, then you're out of form there. If the elbow is in correct form your hand will come back horizontally towards your chest.  This will also put the bow weight on your skeletal system, rather than your muscles.  The back tension will take the load on large muscles of the back.  Try to visualize someone placing a hot dog vertically between the shoulder blades, and you squeezing them together to try to hang on to it.  It appears that you have a much longer draw than you are using, but it's difficult to tell for sure without being there.  My draw grew nearly two inches when I started working on proper form.
Shoot strait and have fun!

Keep that elbow up and inline with the arrow.
After you get tired it gets hard to have good form.
It looks like the arrow is coming off the bow good. Keep having fun!
