Hunting in Georgia?

If you had your choice of moving to Georgia, where would you go?

Somewhere with mountains is a prerequisite

I live in Aiken, SC right next to Augusta, GA...pretty flat here but I have a hunting lease in south Georgia with great hog plus deer and turkey hunting.  Hogs are  pretty much all I hunt anymore as you can do that year round. I'm sure some of the Georgia residents can answer more about the the mountains of north Georgia.  Good Luck.

Hello, I moved to Georgia 2 1/2 years ago. I’m probably not much help to you but, here’s my take on it. Hunting season is long, limits are high, places to hunt are plentiful but you may have to drive a piece depending where you live. Seasons on WMA land are all different depending on the area. The mountains are in the north part of the state and have decent access, some are pretty rough country. Fishing is open year round. I’m still learning but I’m glad I made the move from NY !!

I would actually recommend north-central Georgia, such as Morgan County or thereabout. It is not in the mountains, but it is close by. Also, it is not too far from the coast. Good camping and lodging is available in many locations. I live in Gray, which is in the center of the state just east of Macon. There is good hunting close by, but it is not mountainous. Numerous members on TG live all over Georgia. Maybe a bunch of them will chime in and give you an overview of the state as a whole, whereas my experience is concentrated solely on the small plot I own about 10 minutes from my house.

Let me add that the Traditional Bowhunters of Georgia and North Georgia Traditional Archers are two helpful groups! Good people with bow hunting as a main agenda. Both promoting the sport !!

I would also recommend North Central Georgia, close to the mountains and not too far from the coast. I am in the Army and have been stationed at Both Columbus and Augusta. I tell it to everyone, in the lower 48 Georgia is a sportsman's paradise. Along with bowunting I also fish, Native brookies in the mountains, Bass all summer, and also chase Redfish on the coast... great fun.

 When it comes to bowhunting, SO many opportunities for deer, this is where I really learned deer, just being able to have so many shot opportunities and be in the field so much. Hogs abound so you can get a fix all year long. And even though I've yet to hunt them, black bear are also numerous.

 There is also a pretty healthy Trad community, I attended a lot of 3D shoots and there were more trad guys in Georgia than other places I have lived!

 I love it there! Currently stationed in the California desert and really missing being in Georgia.

Cohutta Wilderness, but be forewarned the culture is very different and the bears ate all the deer. If you actually want to hunt mountain deer you want to live very near. Otherwise you spend too much hunting time traveling.

The only thing any hunting locale in GA has over IA in my opinion is milder weather.

I think GA offers great hunting opportunities and really like the coast for hog hunting in particular.

I lost my job in 1998 and my wife is an RN. I came home and said we can move anywhere we want now so let's over some possibilities.

After looking at several states from Alaska to Texas, common sense and reasoning took over.
I live near Sam McMichael in Gray, middle Georgia. We have bears in the mountains, hogs and turkey everywhere. Deer in every county with varied rut times. I can go to the mountains in an hour and catch trout. I can be to the gulf coast in 4 hours and the east coast for shrimping in 3. I can hunt 365 days a year for big game in various habitats. If I want to go anywhere else, Hartsfield -Jackson is 1 hour away.
We stayed right here and except for a few days in the hottest part of the summer, have no regrets.

Up for the evening.

My wife will be an RN, and I can (hopefully) work from home so this possibility is slowly becoming more real.

I really would prefer to live in the mountains, I love fly-fishing as well.

Few more years I’ll probably move to GA - it’s been a home away from home for me since the early TBG days.

Great info here on hunting in Georgia. I have never hunting Georgia, mattr of fact I have never spent any time in Georgia, other than passing through. After reading this I would like to hunt Georgia in the near future. Thanks to all here who shared their info and hunting experiences in Georgia.  Also reaching out to Biggie Hoffman. Man it is good to hear from you.  I was just thinking about you this past week and was wondering how you were doing.  After all you are part of the reason I am a qualified regular member of the PBS. Glad to hear you are doing ok.
