That frame looks kind of light to me, but what do I know? I see that he is in my neck of the woods, I will have to have a look through on his site.

I have looked at building my own 2x72 and the biggest cost by far is the motor and vfd if you want variable speed. The frame can be done many ways but there is no cheap way to get a vfd and motor, unfortunately.

I bought a 2hp TEFC Baldor on C-list for $60. You don't need a $300. speed controller for one of these. Just put a pulley on the motor that corresponds to the required speed. Simple and cheap.

Yup just control the speed wif different size pulleys.

I want a wider range than pulleys will give. That $60 motor never happens up here, even used furnace motors are $100+. A 2hp TEFC brand name motor would be $250+ easily.

Would be for my used motor. I think VFD's are mostly useful for 3 phase, for single phase you would need to figure out how to keep the capacitors out of the loop at reduced speeds.

That one would cover the amperage, but does it reduce torque when it reduces speed? I'm not an electrical guy (I'm a mechanical engineer...), but I think that is the problem with speed controlling single phase motors.

Yeah, VFD is a 3 phase controller. It allows you to vary the speed without losing the torque.

Ya need a gear box/ transmission setup.

Awesome mod!   How do you keep the belt tracking straight?

Tension & tracking is done on the driven end of the 4 x 32 sander .

The roller out there on the right end is higher in the middle than on both ends.
