Doug Fir Arrow Build. Self nocks and single bevels
« on: February 23, 2021, 06:45:04 PM »
Greetings, hope everyone is doing well and staying healthy.

Just want to share some of my work with you all. I love making wood arrows, it is how I got started in bowhunting. Believe it or not, 10 years ago my local bow shop used to stock port orford cedar shafts for what seemed like pennies. The supply has since become scarce and quality shafting is hard to come by.

I reached out to Surewood shafts for some douglas fir beauties. These guys are making very high quality arrow shafts. I’ve had a bit of success making premium tomato stakes with my veritas dowel maker, using doug fir and sitka. Nothing close to these though. The 11/32” diameter is exact down the entire shaft. Very pleased.

Here is one arrow of a set I am working on. They are for my 67# longbow. The shafts are 75-80lb spine range. Video link down below of my build process. Thanks for your time. Would love to see your wooden longbow arrows.

Nice build along MB.  I like Surewood shafts.
What kind of wood finish do you use?

My Surewood DF are simple Poly dipped...lol

Thank you appreciate the nice words.

I leave them as is and i usually burnish either end of the arrow. I used to use a very small amount of linseed oil over a week long process. Just doing a very light coat each day. I found the sealer i used in the past was too thick and runny
