Thankful...
« on: April 10, 2021, 12:20:11 AM »
I was just thinking the other day how thankful I am...

I have been a craftsman my whole life and I often feel that no one understands me...  Most people work in offices or sales or are in trades like mechanics, plumbing, electrical...  I often felt very alone... Very few people now a days knows what it is like to take a piece of raw material and make something beautiful out of it...  We all bitch about that there is no quality any more...  A lot of tools you buy today are junk and it makes it difficult for the craftsman to do precision work with less than precision tools...  But we find a way...  Everything seems to revolve around money and how fast you can get it done to make a profit... Seems that few take the time to diligently work on perfecting their craft and produce a quality piece of work...

I just wanna say that I am not lonely any more...  That void has been filled...  And in a world of less than quality tools and products, and where money and profit rule most, there is a group of guys that still take pride in their craft and produce quality pieces of craftsmanship...

I feel honored and very Thankful that I came upon this forum to share and be shared with, the ups and downs and the great rewards of making beautiful and functional works of art...  You all are a special breed and I am honored that you guys let me hang with Y'all....

Here's to you guys...  Ya'll are really keeping quality in this world...  Keep on, keeping on...

Very well said, and the feeling is mutual. We're a rare breed in today's lazy, throw away society, and it's nice to have some like-minded folks to visit with on occasion. We all innately understand a large part of each other's character here.

I was talking to Shredd the other day about my $250.00 DeWalt 1/2" shank router, I had to modify it to get a square cut on my bow form. I have modified all of my bow Machines to get what I want.

I always worked solo. I learned painting and construction when I was a teen from a couple of old Austrian ski instructors who had to hide out in the mountains of Idaho during WW2. These guys went thru the European apprentice system and didn't mess around. There was a correct way and that was the only way! Made it impossible to tolerate working for anybody who cut corners or settled for good enough.
They also taught me how to ski and climb mountains. Still miss those guys.
I'm thankful too, I was heading in a bad direction in life until they took me under their wings.

It's a damn friggin shame if you ask me...  For God's sake it's a router, one of the simplest power tools out there...  How can you screw that up??  Well they did...  Wouldn't be cool if a company showed up that made real nice quality tools...  I would pay the extra $100 to $200 compared to the other tools...

My Jet drill press is no better than the harbor freight ones and Jet is twice the price... Very disappointed in the quality... The key slipped out of the chuck and the table was the worst of rough milled and had a concave in it that would not drill at an exact 90*....

Seems like that would be a candidate for a warranty replacement.

Then again if the next one has the same problem you are back to where you started.

I need a 1/2 router for form building but so far "analysis paralysis" has set in.

I’ve had pretty good luck with Bosch; because they’re willing to replace products that fail.  I have a Festool shop vac and a 3” random orbit sander.  Both of those were ridiculously expensive but believe it or not I’ve found them to be well worth the cost.  Unfortunately I don’t see myself ever being able to justify $1600 for a miter saw, I don’t care how perfect it is.

I know a lot of us use grizzly products, but I have found shop fox to be better in every way.  I know they’re basically the same, but my shop fox drill press and table saw has none of the shortcomings that I find all over the grizzly tools.

I have had a different path to this end, but I 100% agree with this sentiment. This is a great group to hang with and learn from.

I feel the same way about the people on this forum. It’s refreshing to be able to communicate with like minded people. Not only like minded, but more than willing to share knowledge and experience.
I’m a third generation woodworker, and though I never met my Grandfather, I am lucky to have been taught by my Dad. He’s 89 now and has a hard time getting around but I still talk with him about just about everything I build and he still has plenty to teach me.
We were discussing the possibility of me selling my old dinosaur of a jointer and replacing it with a new 16” combination machine and he was blown away by the
cost. I paid under $1000 for the old one. It was old when I bought it 20 years ago, but it came with a big mortiser and table saw. I removed the saw as it was a
hazard. My Dad and I have run miles of wood over that old beast and built a bunch of doors and furniture with the mortiser, but I think it’s time to upgrade. It’s a pig to set up properly and even though it can handle 10” boards, I constantly find myself trying to joint bigger boards. I’ve been looking for several days and I have settled on a machine that I would like to have. There’s a lot to look at out there. Some not bad, some crap, and a few good ones. You have  to pay more for a good one. I found two good ones. One costs $6000 and the other, made in Europe, costs  more than $8000. These are both 16” machines. I could go for a 12” and spend less but I could use the big one and it doesn’t take up much more space.
It’s a lot of money but I have had my fill of crappy machines. They don’t save you any money in the end,
Dave.

Great post Rich
100% agree and feel the way you described. I am only 37 but already spent too much of my life working in an office. I am giving myself 2.5 more years to setup a proper shop and start my own business by the time I turn 40. I will strive to offer  quality hand made product and hopefully inspire people to do the same. Keep learning and sharing what I learn

Some guys are gifted with an artistic detail oriented talent. Others are gifted with a scientific, engineering, mathematical talent.

Blend these two together and throw in the urge to push the limits and wala. You got yourself a bowyer.

Hanging out here brings me lots of enjoyment and pushes me to be a better bowyer myself.

Have you ever looked at old tools? A lot of them have a bit of artistic flair in them.
Handwheels with fancy spokes, designs in the castings, etc. That’s craftsmanship. It doesn’t take a lot of work to make something not only functional but good looking as well.
Nowadays it’s all about the bottom line. Pound them out fast and make more money!
Dave.
