Aging Bear Grizzly
« on: April 19, 2021, 11:16:39 AM »
Have a new to me Bear Grizzly that looks to have been refinished, probably non-stock bow.  Have a couple estimates of age, but looking for more opinions.  Pics on iPhone that I have no way of resizing.  Can text them if you might be able to help.

Brown and green.  The paint on limbs looks non-factory.  The decals are in place though.

Sounds like a "Futurewood" Gainesville, Fl. Grizzly. Probly 72-79

Raised coin on the side? Most came from the factory with a Bear WeatherRest, to shoot plastic vanes.

Looks like a nice bow, Michael!!

Mid 70's Futurewood Grizzly. Someone removed the coin, and added the riser inserts.
(Looks like a classy job!! Nice way to fill "holes" everyone used to drill in them)

That bow will hunt!!!   :archer:

The two tone risers were from 1973 to 1984. If it has bark brown limb glass it's from 1973 to 1976. A KR-serial number prefix was from 1970 to late 1977 then it was changed to a GR-serial number prefix. Yours should have the standing bear button medallion not the coin. The standing bear button medallion was used from 1973 ( actually late 1972 ) to 1984.

There's no medallion and it kinda looks like the limbs got a paint job, pretty good, but not factory.  Was told the SN probably started with GR

I'm guessing the 1978 mark is pretty close.  Came with 21 - 2219 arrows that should shoot pretty good from it.

String was on upside down and nock point tied on.  Flemish twist determined to not be FF cause the string ends were easily cut with small scissors.  FF is much harder to cut I've been told.

Dont shoot ff out of that bow unless loops are generously padded. At 60 lbs your asking for trouble

Yeah that is why I tried to cut some of the "fuzz" at the end of the twist.  It was easily trimmed with a pair of scissors.  Confident it is a Dacron flemish string.  68# at my draw should push the 2219 arrows pretty well.  This may be my "work out" bow.  Might even sneak away for a try at hogs.
