Hunting the Ghost Gobblers
« on: April 27, 2021, 11:06:38 PM »
Teresa Asbell sent me her new "PathFinder" Jacket, zipper front made with the New "Iron Wool". This wool is heavier than her regular wool, it's dense ..."and the rain won't go throught it nither"
It kept the early morning cold north winds from getting through to me.

I've Been hunting hard since turkey season started, sleeping in my hide a-way Cabin "RedBird's Nest"
Hunting has been tough little to no gobbing and only seeing hens and a few Jakes, the Long Beards are nowhere to be found....maybe they're dead and I'm hunting Ghost  :bigsmyl:

Beautiful bow. The birds around here have gone mute the last few days, it must be the full moon we just had. Been hearing a few gobbles off the roost and then silence. Not the gobble symphony from a couple weeks ago.

I am still slugging it out for another big tom, but I believe they have wised up to my decoys. Its great knowing I am not the only one chasing birds with a shortbow.

Good luck Ron. Keep us posted on how it goes out there.

Keep after them buddy.  It’ll be satisfying just like your buck last fall.  You’re in a good area and eventually the ghost will appear.

Ray, there's a lot of tall timber behind my lake and I'm thinking that's where they might be. Problem is it's hard for me to get back there with the boot on my broken foot. The white line on the left is the back hay field and that's where I hunt and usually see birds

The turkey population seems to be diminishing over the years. I don't believe it's hunting pressure, my theory is we have too many predators praying on nesting hens.
Turkeys roost in trees at night with the exception of hens when they lay eggs in nest they make on the ground. This makes the hen vulnerable as she sleeps with her hed tucked under her wing to coons, skunks, opossum, fox's and coyotes.

Some years back I was keeping track of a nesting hen. I day when she left the nest to eat and drink I counted 10-to 12 eggs in her nest.

This was the scene a couple mornings later. I was mad enough to kill whatever had done this to my hen turkey. Nothing left but feathers and broken egg shells....a dozen turkeys gone fron the local population.

😡😡😡
Ron, predatory animals of both nests (coons and possums) and birds (coyotes, fox and bobcats) are all having effects

My Daughter was coming to visit this week end so I stayed home to spend time with her. This morning I got a text from my Brother in laws Nephew who decided to go and stay in his Uncle's cabin for the weekend. He said two gobblers and a hen crossed the field right where I had planned to move my blind. They didn;'t respond to his calling and never gobbeled. His modern 12 gage killed this bird (my bird)  :banghead:

Ron at least there is another bird.  But anyhow you sure look good in your new coat! Besides it will be even better now when you do kill that bird.
The hunt is the trophy!

I would be happy for  a young hunter who got a Turkey, no matter the weapon.

Patience big fella.  The birds are just warming up.  Get back to the farm and enjoy your cabin.  The gobblers will show up!  👍

Sun comes up, Toms gobble. Boy meets girl, gets "busy".....

Jenny dumps Tom, like a hot rock, and heads off to nest. Old Tom is sad and lonely.....

Tom goes looking for new girl. Maybe she is still by Ron's blind....?? Hmmmm... :archer:

Hang in there, my brother!!!
I only shoot WOOD arrows... My kid makes them, fast as I can break them!

Roy, he's in his 60's and he has killed a bird every year with his 3" mag. He has some of the best hunting behind the lake where I can't get too but because I wasn't there this last weekend he hunted MY field from my Hidden Hunter blind. In my opinion he disregarded hunter ethics by hunting my spot when I wasn't there

So if someone trespassed on your property when you wern't there and climed up in your tree stand and killed a big buck, you'd just say...."I'm sure there are more big bucks left"

Apparently I’ve been hunting ghost gobblers all morning - haven’t seen or heard one yet.  Even had a live hen hang out in the dekes a good while...I can hunt another 45 min....

Ron - you could beat him up.
