MTD with a linear mark on both limbs
« on: May 04, 2021, 03:13:51 PM »
  • Traded for a Martin MTD some time ago, the string was trash so I never shot it.  Recently, traded it away for another bow and some arrows.  The guy sent the bow back saying the bow has stress checks on the limbs at the bolt on.  I see the linear "marks" but I can't get a finger nail to catch on them and think the might be a scratch, if that.  Not even sure if I can get a picture of them, they're that faint.  Any Martin experts out there are anyone with some ideas?

Definitely need a pic, unless you are looking for a few pages worth of speculation :wavey:

This is the best I can do.  Feels like a scratch.

Does it go away if you wet it? At that spot, it's definitely suspect for a stress crack. Could easily be below the surface in the glass

I wouldn't call that a scratch. Looks like a crack in the glass to me. Doesn't matter if your fingernail catches it or not. Are there two? One at each limb bolt?

Might not hurt anything for a long time, or ever, but I wouldn't want it either.

I'll look at the ends to see it it penetrates.  Would a coat of super glue but advised?

It is from overtightening the limb bolts. It is fine to shoot, just a cosmetic issue.

I'll put a coat of super glue over it to seal it.

Seal the bolt hole thru limb too, I had a limb do that without being bolted on.  Think it got moisture in the wedge and swelled it.
Stay sharp, Kenny.

It's a slot bolt on arrangement.  I'll coat the inner "U" as well.

Use the thin super glue.

What he said.

This stuff wicks like nothing else I have ever used. It wicks so hard and fast it might make your crack disappear.

Anyone ever tried the "Thick" version for fletching.   Seems like it would be less likely to run on the shaft if it's as Thick as they suggest.

Thanks, I went ahead and ordered an ounce to try it.  I expected to get railed on the price but only $7.50 and free shipping.  That's less than Gorilla locally and didn't have to even back out the driveway!  :)

I love the tape   It's so fast. You can tape up a pile of feathers and slap them on the shafts one after another. I think the next fastest way is with Barge or some kind of contact cement. The high solvent content adhesives like CA and fletching cement don't last out here very long. It just gets sucked into the atmosphere like anything else that contains any moisture.

No, I remember when the guy invented it though.  He was traveling the country promoting it.   I can almost remember his name!   :)

What do you think about it?  Always seemed to complicated for a guy who can't tape up a perfectly square Christmas gift.
