3:1 Ratio Broadheads

I never considered the outback supreme when trying to think of Aussie made 3:1 heads for this thread because they aren't 3:1. Just like the grizzly heads aren't 3:1 with the exception of the kodiak.

Thays trie, but very few are, technically the kodiak isnt either from specs ive seen. But somewhere in the 2.5+ -3 range is better than  a lot of options out there.

Yeh. The front page of their website says 3:1 but when you read the description of the Supreme in the shop section it says "close to a 3:1 ratio".

According to 3Rivers the Kodiak's are 3 1/8" x 1 3/16", so your right, not quite 3:1.

They aren't 3:1 but I'm using Zwickey No Mercy on my arrows.

I agree on the zwickey no mercy being a good starting point if you can’t find a true 3:1.

According to 3Rivers the Kodiak's are 3 1/8" x 1 3/16", so your right, not quite 3:1.

I always suspected that 3:1 was some rule of thumb that through lore somehow became a rule.

Is there any science behind that ratio for a broadhead anyway?

for sure somewhere around 3:1 will have beneficial penetration attributes. doesn't have to be exact.

Years ago there were extensive field trials done on African game.  It came out of that.  That ratio was the optimum for penetration.  Other things were shown as well.  Twp blades penetrate better than three.  Three does better than four.  Heavy arrow produce better momentum to aid in penetration. 
I suspect that someone here can post a link to the study.

I have killed a couple of deer with Schulz Hunter's Heads, a few with Eskimos, and one with a Grizzly on cedar tapered arrows with my 38 at my 26" draw.  Only once did I not get complete penetration.  That was with the Grizzly, the deer jumped on release and the arrow hit the right rump and stopped at the front left shoulder.  The arrow disappeared in the deer, but the deer went down in about 100 yards, with a good enough blood trail to follow with a pen flashlight.

I appreciate everyones input, i decided for now to try out a Zwickey Eskimo glue on with a 75gr steel threaded adapter for a total at 200gr.
