What glue to attach foam insulation to hot box?
« on: July 28, 2021, 01:20:14 PM »
I'm going to be building my heat box this weekend. I have some quarter inch foam insulation that I want to line it with. Can anyone recommend a glue that I can use to attach it that won't harm the foam and can stand up to the temperature? Thanks!

Contact cement should not affect most foams, especially if the foam is faced with foil, which it should be for heat retention and reflectance. Dap CC is rated to 180deg, but it won't see that temp with an inch or more of insulation in the way. I use my CC foam bonded box at 200deg all the time

I used one of the spray on adhesives by 3M...  Did not work too well...  Not sure which one...

Contact cement like Flem said should work well...  You don't have to coat the whole surface...  Maybe just do the corners and a spot in the middle...  If you use foam with no backing I would do a test piece first...

Caulk adhesives will probably work also...  Or just plain old acrylic caulk could work...

1/4" is pretty thin insulation for a hot box, you may want thicker. The PL series of construction adhesives are good to around 150F and will bond nearly anything to anything. Should not harm the foam, either.

Foil foam foil is pretty good stuff or foil bubble foil

"The product consists of two 96% reflective layers of film bonded to two internal layers of heavy gauge polyethylene bubbles (total thickness 5/16”)."
So it reflex 96% of the heat back towards were it came from.
I covered 4400 square feet in the ceiling of one of my buildings back in 2005 good stuff.
In the ceiling you need a air space between the foil and the ceiling

I'm using 1/4" foam that has one shiny reflective side. The Bingham's video said to only line the inside with aluminum foil ..so I thought I was going above and beyond that?

Put your foam on the outside not the inside, it will be subjected to less heat. I used liquid nails for the insulation on my drying box.
