Season opened last weekend but I was fortunate to go hunt a friends place with a group of great folks. I got to our place last night but skipped the evening sit and stayed at the ranch house, shot my bow and drank a couple of beers. This morning I dropped off everyone at their stands, drove back to where I park and walked the last quarter mile to the stand. I spooked a bunch of deer bedded around my stand (in a big white oak currently dropping acorns) and I was muttering under my breath and climed in about 45 minutes before sunrise. Fortunately they weren't too spooked and wandered back in, feeding all around me as day break and dawn rolled through.
Soon this guy came in and I kept passing opportunities to shoot him as it's still pretty hot here and I hate cleaning them inbthe heat. After 20bor 25 minutes though he came around to my left at 13 yards and I couldn't resist. I drew and came up the offside leg, picked a spot and released. I could see both ends of the arrow sticking out as he left and knew he'd be down quick. The blood trail however left something to be desired but he only went 60 to 70 yards. Still not a single bevel fan.
First buck I've killed on our ranch in the 5 years we've owned it.
