Which 3 Piece Hybrid?
« on: September 09, 2021, 03:03:22 PM »
Hey guy’s, I’ve been perfectly happy with the bows I own for the last several years but I’m getting the itch to try something a little different. I’ve been out of the loop and not keeping up with who’s making what anymore so I’m looking for opinions on which 3 piece hybrid longbow you would choose right now and why?

A few that are high on my list is a Bigfoot (I talked to him little over a year ago and he wasn’t currently taking orders), Whippenstick (no longer making bows that I know of) and Acadian Woods. Another that I’m really interested in is Timber Ghost but I don’t think he has longbow limbs currently?

Anyway I’m looking for something with good performance and slightly sleeker, smaller recurve riser feel. I know speed is a small part of the equation but I’d hope to meet or surpass the performance of my RER which is pushing 9.5gpp @ 195fps.
Also I’d like to try out a bow with the riser having a Micarta or G10 I beam type design for the added weight and stiffness, I want a 70# bow so it needs to be someone that builds strong bows.

So guy’s hearing what I’m looking for who is out there that I should be looking at? Who do you recommend and why?

P.S. I can’t shoot an ugly bow so the A&H, Black Swans and such are out!

Thank you for your time
Joshua

Big foot is taking order again.
Here is an hybrid bow coming from Kirk. G10 Ibeam 19 “ riser 62 “ bow made for 32” DL
La critique est aisée mais l'art est difficile.

I highly doubt you'll find a hybrid that will shoot 9.5 gpp faster than 195 fps, unless perhaps you have a long draw length, but if you find one, I'd be interested in knowing about it.

I have a 31" draw and the only longbow I've owned that would get close to that, maybe, is Dryad ACS, but I never shot that light of arrow and my memory is too suspect to quote any Chrono numbers as it's been a few years!

My favorites to date. Tall Tines Stickflinger,  Zipper Nitro, Primal Tech and not a speed demon but an awesome bow Yellowstone halfbreed.  I would think a Caibow Silver fox is up there. I've owned A&H and I personally thought my Centaur out performed it.

The A&H 3 piece now being made by Stalker is gonna be one of the fastest if not the fastest. They do offer G-10 risers. The risers are relatively sleek/streamlined IMO as well. They have a 14 inch riser and a 16 inch as well.Take a look.
Slammers are nice by Stewart and should be considered in your search. He also has the 14 and 16 inch risers

One of the best looking with Artistic flare is the Thunderhorn. Not sure if thier still being made though.

Thanks a ton for the input guy’s I will be taking a look at all mentioned.

I should say I would also really like to give Centaur archery by Jim Neeves a look I’m just afraid I won’t like that style of longbow riser. I know the three piece “more recurve” style risers with longbow limbs feel good to me but the longbows with “traditional style” risers that I’ve shot so far just don’t.

I have two of Big Jim's three piece Buffalo bows, and really like them. Stalker stickbows is another that looks like it would fit the bill.

Take a look at the Caribow Silver Fox.   I've never shot mine through a chrono but it's a very fast longbow and a real looker.

The Centaur your thinking about is also worth considering even though its not a 3 piece. His grip with the thumbrest is really nice IMO.

In that bow you would want to consider the dark matter material for the riser.Mine has that and the Mini size Selway rawhide slide on quiver for a very solid, tight, strong and stable unit with descent mass weight.

Thank you guy’s again.

The Tall Tine’s and the Caribow bows are both very good looking bows and I may need to pick one up. I can sacrifice some energy for good looks!

I know I probably just need to contact both bowyers but does anyone know off hand if the Tall Tines or Caribow offer putting G10 or Micarta in the riser to stiffen it up?

Another vote for the Big Foot sasquatch hybrid. One heck of a performer and he has built two bows for me with the G-10 Ibeam. My latest from him is a chromoply riser, very dense and heavy. More so than my bocote riser with G-10 Ibeam. His quickest bow is the SS, a static recurve. Good luck.

The are a lot of very nice bows.  I like my Fedora Extreme and my Big jim buffalo, but I really shoot my Bigfoot well.  Kirk and Big Jim are both great to real with (Mike was too, but he's retired).

I just noticed you mentioned Timber Ghost. I have one of his Apparition longbows, and it is a great bow. I won't shoot that bow for a few months, and can take it out and hit right where I aim. Most of my bows I can't do that,it seems to be very fast also.

I still like my three piece Big Jim Buffalo as stated in my first post too.

Iwill be interested to see what you settle on….seems to me you might have to compromise somewhere.

I shoot ILF hunting bows, 31” DL.

I have the dryad LB limbs. Nice but the purported performance is exaggerated, IMO. My Uukha ILF recurve limbs are much faster in comparison. You might have to sacrifice some speed.

I have the new Stalker riser w/g10. Nice, beautiful but not what I would call ‘Sleek’ like the Toelke risers.
Unlike Bigfoot its a smallerG10 piece buried in the riser. You only see it in the limb pockets. My 19” riser feels a bit heavier and slightly larger than my others- almost a metal riser heavy feel. I like it but haven’t had time to really set it up yet.

Primal Tech has been getting a lot of good press, as are others.

Have been playing with a River Raisin recently.  Great little 3 piece bow that performs well at my 27" draw, so bet the speed would really be there at the longer draw length.  These bows are very well made and maybe one of the best kept secrets out there.
