The 7000 year old Hjarnø bow found in Denmark a few years ago. One tip was missing.

I would call that a mollegabet bow, but it would seem the Danes had the idea as well.

That's a fabulous find and a great 3D recreation.    Fascinating to me that the Northern Cultures  developed that "lever-tipped" concept rather than the recurve.  Both designs give added energy to the arrow, of course.

Are there dimensions for it, length, width, lever length, width and thickness?
I have a piece of elm I've been working on that might end up as the Elg Bue using the moose(elg)sinew you sent me. This would be a good design to use as a template.

PatB -- the only dimensions I could find for the Hjarnø bow are overall length 1.6m, width 5cm, lever 1/3 the length of the working limb...  very close to the dimensions of the Møllegabet find, I believe.  I don't have access to anything other than academia.edu for research papers and it is only mentioned there in passing, not in detail.

So that about 63"x almost 2". I think my stave is just under that. This might just work out ok.  :thumbsup:

Give it a try Pat.  I've made Møllegabets from boards but not staves, as small as 48" n-t-n.  It's the proportions of lever to working limb and handle length (figure 5" fade to fade) that really matter, IMHO.

I took all the metric measurements and changed to English
The top ones, 71" NTN
the bottom one is a modified one. 64" NTN

I think my stave is about 60" +/- but it has a twist. I'll get it down to floor tiller stage, heat the twist out then set it up to the style. This is gonna be a slow process because I want to wait til winter before adding the sinew...plus I have to get my brain back into bow building mode.  :bigsmyl:
