Hello coaches. What bows do you recommend to young students?
« on: October 03, 2021, 09:54:25 PM »
I have a bin full of old fiberglass bows. I used to use them when teaching young teens but they are #30-#35 and seem too stiff for 11-12-year-olds. Too stiff to begin with anyway, once the students develop proper form they'll be pulling #40 in no time. I have a group of 6 students who are interested. Samick used to make a good beginner bow if I remember well. I never owned one myself but tried them once at a summer camp. But I just saw some disheartening reviews on them. Do you use them? Should I recommend the parents buy them? Any other recommendations?
Thank you all,
Aram

I generally use 25# bows for beginning archers of any age.  I acquired Samick bows when they were about the only low cost game in town, and I’ve never been disappointed with the ones I have.  But they are like Genesis compounds: nobody would really want to shoot one if they decided to continue on in archery.  Recently I bought a 30# TradTech Trident for my 13 year old granddaughter who seems interested enough to continue on to the next level, and I have to say I’m impressed!  ILF, so no problems switching limbs later on.  The best thing is that it comps 5 fps faster than a 35# Samick Nighthawk shooting the same arrow, and pulls smoother.  Of course it is quite a bit more expensive, but the extra cost seems to be justified.

Thank you, McDave. That's a thorough review! I'll definitely put it on the table for the youngsters' parents as a better option.

Also the no glove string add ons take the bite out of string release for new archers.
Pray like Tuck and shoot like Robin.
