I want to build a Trilam longbow
« on: November 06, 2021, 10:51:32 AM »
Anyone wanna help me get set up with measurements for a 3 lam 68 inch bow?
Looking for about 50 lbs.
I'm thinking a very slight deflex/reflex setup
I got some yellowheart I wanna use for the belly.
Maple core and hickory backing.

Belly lam 1/4" thick with no taper.
Core lam 1/4" thick, tapered from 1/4" thick at riser to 1/16th thick at tips.
Hickory backing 1/8" thick no taper, must be straight 1/4 sawn with no run outs or imperfections.
1 1/4" wide at fades with a straight taper to 1/2" wide at tips.
Mid limb posts spaced half way between end of riser and tips.
4" post at center of riser, 3" post for mid limb posts, 6 inch limb tip posts.

YOU MUST PAD THE HICKORY BACKING SO THE CLAMPS DO NOT INDENT IT.....
I ALSO PAD THE BELLY LAM FOR SAME REASON....

Wrap the entire bow with plastic wrap after it's glued up.

Rich you should try one someday, I'll bet you will enjoy it.

Lay the high tech thoughts aside, forget about speed, and just create a sweet shooting trilam.

I want to make one for a fun shooter.
Was hoping to get wood shafts and make up my own arrows as well. I like the idea of painting up some cresting. Gotta get back to work so.i can afford the stuff

Is there a formula somewhere that dictates how to calculate the wood required for the lenghts and thickness to get the desired results?

Do I owe another $19.99?

Yes, it's called experience and trial and error:)
Wood isn't as predictable like glass bow stacks.

10-4 on the $19.99
