Beginner Bow Hunter

Hello friends!
If someone could direct me to the appropriate thread that has the best info or if there isn’t any I’d like to get some tips on a new setup!

Currently I’m running with a Bear Super Grizzly recurve bow 50# with a 25in draw length.
Any suggested arrows for hunting? I’ve got half a dozen arrows in Gold Tip traditionals 400’s with 150 grain field tips and 150 grain magnus stingers (for hunting) any thoughts on this setup? Any better recommendations on arrows for hunting and broadheads or is what I got okay?

Personally I think the 400's might be stiff for your draw length~44#. Would think a 500 spine would be closer to a better tune. The magnus 150 though are a good broadhead choice for a lot of animals. Good luck and enjoy the journey.

Hmm what’s the downside of a too stiff shaft?

Is the bow 50#@28” and you draw 25”? If so, your actual draw weight would be closer to 41# and those .400 spine arrows are waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too stiff. Even more “too stiff” if they have been cut down from full length any.

If that is the case, you would be much better off with a .600 (or maybe even .700) spine shaft.

The downside of a way too stiff shaft is that you don’t take full advantage of the energy the bow creates because the arrow dosen’t fly straight! That will in turn rob you of potential penetration.If you are wanting to hunt, you need the best tuned arrow you can get.

Damn…wish the dude who sold me on the bear bow told me that…aby bow recommendations for 50# at a 25” draw weight? How do I determine for future reference on future bows?

Generally the mid poundage bows, 40 to 60, come in about 3lbs different per inch of draw length above or below the X@28" rating.  Longer draw lengths can cause some bows to stack but that shouldn't be a concern for you or I.

I just remeasured myself and my draw length comes in at 27” so an inch shorter than the 28” so I’m probably close to 50lbs draw weight….Hopefully. Should I still consider different size shafts? Also are there such a thing as “best” hunting arrows? The guy I go to only has gold tip traditional carbon arrows and he fletches them himself so I’m not sure on what’s really best. End result is I really want to hunt with my bow. Practice of course on my end and I’ve got 150grain field tips to match my broadhead weight. But still looking for that perfect tune before I get to practicing.
