Help with shop layout…
« on: December 05, 2021, 01:40:54 AM »
Looking for some inspiration.
Ive come to believe that this forum has the highest concentration of laminated bow builders so have been lurking here trying to absorb as much info as possible.
I am a fairly new traditional convert. I have an obsessive need to tinker and build. So have become very intrigued with the idea of building my own laminated bows.
I have a shop that Ive started clearing out to set out on this adventure.
Ive got a 60 amp sub panel pulled to it and a 220 breaker.
What I am in desperate need of is some inspiration.
Id love to see some pics of folks bow building spaces.

11ft by 25ft  footprint. Old school dimensionally true 2x6 exterior. 11 by 11 concrete slab on one side. Jimmy rigged 2x8 flooring for the rest.
It started out as 3 and a half walls and partial roof, one large room and dirt floor when we bought the place 6 years ago.
I pulled power, insulated w/ r19 and sealed an 11x7 room off to grow weed for the old lady. Shut that down here a year back due to her having more than she will ever consume, and sungrown organic seems a healthier cancer fighting alternative… Litttle off topic there. Point being is I think that “flower room” may prove a good spray booth?
Im working with an 11x11, 13x7 , 4x13 spaces right now, but can easily my this one room or any number of configurations. I just have no way of knowing how to best utilize the space yet.

Put everything on wheels and build as much storage and shelving as space affords.
Everything starts to occupy floor space faster that you can use it. Go vertical as much as possible.

What Flem said... 11' is on the narrow side... I would definitely put some things on wheels like bandsaws and such...

My old shop was narrow L shape. I would put the table saw and a 4 x 8 out feed table on the long wall.  Wheels on the rest. The out feed table becomes a work bench.

I appreciate that insight.
Same issues arise with growing.
The tall side of my shop is 10ft walls. I plan to build as much shelving overhead as I can salvaging lumber.
Bench at the front door will hopefully prove big enough for fletching/string making. Trying to dream up a fold out for my arrow saw, or may just leave it in my smaller shop.
Bandsaws seem pretty straight forward. Been looking at some older units on the craigslist. Thickness sander will probably have to wait as I do not see any around used. Got a 1x42 grinder I am potentially doing some trading for. This will speed up my sharpening so as to make a more profitable side business to fund more tools. Sharpening on stones, while enjoyable does not prove a very lucrative endeavor. Got a good few folks wanting arrows built local too. So I think my first bench may be set up with the bitz, saw and vinyl cutter for now.
I assume I can use the 1x42 for some light duty shaping also.
I should have enough lumber and sheeting to build a heat box. I may get to starting on that this week.
I think Ill leave the flower room as is in being sealed. This gives me a lot of storage potential in the lung room/hallway.

Forgive my ignorance here.
I have a crap ton of hand tools and random stuff. Though am completely in the dark as to what I will need beyond what Ive gathered from threads and common sense in that Ill be woodworking.
I think I have a table saw, no infeed though. Not 100% I still have one.
Ive got a compressor, chop saw, hand saws of many shapes and sizes. A few rasps and orbital and belt hand sanders, files.
I think Id do well to find me a tool list and brand recommendations from y’all.

Ive got an old chicken coop attatched to this shop that I can utilize for air compressor to save that floor space.
Im thinking maybe I should nock down my partition wall? That would give me a lot more leeway on the length situation.
Any good reason to have a sealed room?

Put a dust collector in the coop.

Put a dust collector in the coop.
Thats great thinking. Ive already got exhaust fans in every room.
And have a hole that my a/c vents into that coup.
That actually sparks my imagination a bit.
Ive got a lot of 6” ducting for air cooled lighting. If I ran a section length wise. Id have multiple exhaust options for grinders and saws.
Thank you.
I think Im nocking down this partition as I have a hard time thinking it would benifit more than hinder
