when the season is winding to an end, and you still have a tag unfilled.

i didnt get to hunt during the rut for a buck as i usually do.
my mom was to have open heart surgery nov 1st.
and after the surgery i would have to stay with her while she healed.
so i knew my rut hunting wasnt gonna happen , so i wasnt gonna let any opprotunity pass that may come my way in the woods.
I was at my cabin scouting around with a new bow the last weekend of oct. in hopes of making something happen before nov. 1st rolled around.
i jumped a rabbit and they usually dont stop and give me a shot, so i was surprised when this one stopped about about 8 yds. out . it was a tight squeeze to shoot between two sapplings.
another surprise that i made the shot.

i decided to get up early and get in to my stand by my driveway the next morning.
i had trail cam pics of some decent bucks moving through here. so i was hoping our paths might connect this morning.

I was surprised by a deer walking at a steady pace kind of behind me. in an instant i grabbed my bow turned and drew and released,
just that quick!  i thought i saw short spikes.
so i was hoping i could use my doe tag on it, (under 3 inches counts as a doe).
i knew the shot was good so i immediately climbed down, the sun was just peeking over the hills and i thought (already) i never kill at first light.
 but i wasnt being picky.
 i was deer hunting
       clean pass through.

it was a short 80yd blood trail.
 a big fat spike buck.

so now im really liking this new bow, i think it will be my ( old man) bow, cause its lighter in draw weight than what im used to.

so now its nov. and im thinking of the rut.
my girlfreind comes to help take care of my mom, and so i get to get out , but its a couple days before the gun season when a new buck tag would be valid. ( i only hunt with my bow on archery only public ground during gun season.)
so im slipping into my usual hunting area on public and see a doe out in front of me, i stop and go to me knees, and look through my binoculars, shes about 40 yds. then i see a big buck behind her, he starts easing up behind her and she runs.
i watch till they are out of sight . so now i make my move.
i get in close to where they were, in hopes of being in the middle of a chase. i back up to a tree with a bunch of vines for cover, scrape the leaves away, and watch.
a few minutes later here they come, not really chasing . hes just dogging her.
then she starts moving my way . and the she bounces right in close with that big buck behind her. he stops about 20 yds away and looks the other way in the wide open.(MAN I DONT HAVE A BUCK TAG!) so i shoot her, she went maybe a hundred yds. and hes still standing next to her laying dead.
so now im really liking this bow more.

so now im at my cabin cutting some firewood and hunting. i thought i knew a pretty good place out back past the pines in the oaks , where there was a good trail earlier in the season that i might set up on, got in there an hour and a half before sunset, didnt really see any heavily used trails, so i just setup between the two best trails. set my sticks and stand, nipped off a few limbs and sat down.
i brought my video camera out but didnt really think it was worth setting up. so all i had was a cheap go pro knock off mounted to my bow.
i thought id seen something move about a hundred yds. away down by the little creek.
but i stared at it long enough to chalk it up to the wind.
then a squirrel came out, so i knew it was time for things to start moving around.
i had seen bobcat, fox, coyote, coons around this spot, and i was hoping for any of those to show up. also this place has the occasional wild hog roaming through.(almost shot one couple yrs ago, by the time i was sure it wasnt a black calf , it winded me. ((MAN ,DONT WANNA SHOOT ONE OF THOSE!))
then i seen something move in the same spot as before, the binoculars confirmed it was a deer, it kinda moving this way. but im thinking no way! it going up towards the hill, then it turns and starts up the trail towards me,( ALRIGHT) here we go. then when it gets to about 15 yds. i see another deer behind it, it got its head up nipping buds off the limbs
the first one is a button buck and the second one is, im guessing his momma. a long nose big ol doe.  the buck gets to about 5 yds. i draw release,  right over his back. DAMMNITT!  he hops off a few yds. trying to figure out what happened and i have another arrow on the string now. and here comes momma, she stops at about 7-8 yds.
i have a small 6 inch window to get an arrow through, as she puts her head down i release, PERFECT!  i must have blinked or something, i lost sight of her within about 5 yds of the shot. i could see my bloody arrow stuck in the ground, so i lowered my bow and packed my stuff up and followed the trail to her , she went about 60 yds. and fell over in the little creek.

thats how my hunting season went this year, got lucky a few times!
and my mom is doing good.

if you read all that, thanks.   post up your hunting story, il read it. GOOD LUCK YALL!

Well done!  I'm waiting until season is over before I do a write up.  I'm optimistic that I'm gonna shoot something with that longbow before time is up.
