Asbell Hunter Orange Vest and Scarves
« on: January 07, 2022, 10:19:38 AM »
Hi all, new to the forums but I've been lurking here reading for a few weeks.

I'm looking into getting an Asbell wool Pathfinder. I already know what I want as far as the Pathfinder, but I have two questions related to that.

1. Has anyone bought the Hunter Orange vest? I want it to be able to throw it  over my pathfinder when we move from bow to rifle season.  I'd be interested to hear some reviews and see some pictures if anyone has used the product.

2. Has anyone bought and used the Asbell wool scarves? Again, feedback/reviews and pictures would be welcome! Anyone use scarves when hunting in the colder weather? It seems like they would be useful in keeping warm.

This is my thought on what you’re asking. I guess it depends on terrain you hunt. If the area is full of burr docks, hitch hikers I’d skip anything resembling wool for an outer layer.
Another consideration at least in my mind is I never wear the Asbell wool, and I’ve got a bunch, as outside layers since it’s wind breaking qualities are not great. I’ve really seen not too much wool except really physically heavy to carry/wear stuff that is.
I’d wear them underneath something designed to do so but they make a wind shearing type vest or something. Just not something I’ve got

I appreciate that. There's a decent amount of burdock on our property, but I don't tend to hunt the areas where it congregates.

I was hoping to be able to use the wool as an outer layer since it is a great material for blending into natural surroundings from everything I've read.

Of course I don't suspect that I will be in winds that will always require a windbreaker, so it will probably just depend on the day to day circumstances and weather forecast.

I appreciate the answer.

I actually have the orange vest and a mackinaw that I used to use a great deal but not recently. I always like the mackinaw over my normal clothing but always wondered if a CO might say it didn't meet the minimal sq inch orange requirement. ( I measured it and it does)

The only negative and it is a very insignificant negative...is that the orange fibers tend to shed against your other clothing and vehicle seats.

I wear the orange wool Mackinaw Asbell over my pathfinder on public land when I hunt hogs, it's a requirement.  I also use the plaid wool scarf to keep wind out of my neck.  But I'm in Texas and there usually is not much to stick to my wool.  Grew up hunting in PA and we always had canvas briar jackets on top.

Yeah, I've always had a cheap orange vest I bought at wal mart as a teenager to cover my orange requirements for rifle season, but I thought the wool vest might go better with my push toward natural materials and more traditional clothing and weapons. Sadly I don't think they sell a hunter orange mackinaw anymore.

I have a windbreaker that Teresa made years ago. It's the quietest vest I have found
