Burl for limb veneer
« on: January 15, 2022, 05:19:46 PM »
I’ve got some sheets of pepperwood burl veneer that seems just long enough that it might work for limb veneers, but it’s got a lot of checks and small voids.  I wonder if there’s some way to make it work, like possibly backing it with some thin maple veneers and filling in the voids with epoxy at glue up?  Any thoughts?

Or you could just use plenty of epoxy during glue up

Yep if you can spread the glue without them breaking use plenty of smooth on and fill the voids.
I got some buckeye veneers a while back that were backed with bamboo. Been too fragile on thier own.

Cut your veneers to the width of your bamboo core tapers, lay them on your tapers and use a brown or black sharpie to color the bamboo taper where it lined up with the holes in the veneers. Then glue the veneer to the core, pressing them together flat, wrap in plastic wrap and clamp between two boards.

So it’s workable to glue them to a backing and let it cure, and then do the normal glue up at a later date?  That’s awesome.  This stuff looks so cool with dye, too.  If I can get a few of these into a bow intact, I’ll consider that a win.  Thanks guys!

Just add a little dye to your glue when you back them. That will fill the voids with a color of your choice and will add more character to the veneers when glued into the bow.

Oh wow, those are gorgeous.  I’ve got some Micah powder for resin.  I wonder if that would work for ea40.  I’ve even got a glow in the dark powder dye, but I’ll probably save that for something less dramatic than Burl limbs.  I’m excited to see what I can put together with these.  I hear buckeye Burl isn’t strong enough for a riser, even stabilized with an i beam?  I’ve seen some guys use it; Maybe not the whole riser, but an accent.

You can use buckeye in a riser  But you want more G10 and more or less have slabs of buckeye

I have a longbow with Buckeye Burl riser and limbs. Done by Ron Madden at Primal Tech.

It is just as you say, a G10 riser with Burl slabs and Burl Veneers on the limbs.

Gorgeous bow. Looks like mother natures camouflage !

I'm curious what kind of dye you use with EA-40 ?
